Luis F. Gomez, Jr., born in Washington, D.C., is a lifelong resident of Montgomery County, Maryland, where he attended St. Jude School in Rockville, and Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Wheaton. He also attended the University of Maryland College Park, graduating with a BA degree in 1988, and Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad Law Center, graduating with a JD degree in 1996. During his final year in law school, Mr. Gomez participated in a full-time internship in the SAUSA program in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, prosecuting crimes as a student attorney in United States Magistrate Courts. Upon being admitted to the Bar of the State of Maryland in 1996, Mr. Gomez began his legal career in the Law Offices of Tomes & Salter, where he learned the fundamentals of the legal profession from his mentor and first employer, James W. Salter, III. Under Mr. Salter’s direction, he engaged in a civil litigation practice, representing individuals and small businesses in the areas of contracts and real estate law.
He left Tomes & Salter in 1999 to work as a prosecutor in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties, where he handled hundreds of criminal cases over the next seven years. At one point, Mr. Gomez was solely responsible for prosecuting all major DWI offenses and for reviewing all incidents of automobile fatalities in Prince George’s County. During this period in his career, Mr. Gomez served as an adjunct professor at Prince George’s Community College, where he taught business law and criminal law to paralegal students.
In 2006, Mr. Gomez returned to the Law Offices of Tomes & Salter, just as he had promised. His focus today is civil litigation and criminal defense in Maryland state and federal courts and in Washington, DC, where he was admitted to practice law in 1998.
Mr. Gomez is actively involved in local bar associations. He is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and was a Fellow in the MSBA Leadership Academy Class of 2001. Mr. Gomez has long been a member of the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association, where he served as its Secretary from 2000 to 2002, as its Treasurer in 2003. He served on the Association’s Board of Directors and is presently an active member of its Judicial Selections Committee. Mr. Gomez is also a member of the Bar Association of Montgomery County, Prince George’s County Bar Association and Maryland Bar Foundation, and he regularly accepts assignments from the Maryland Public Defenders Office involving complex felony criminal cases.
Mr. Gomez is a founding member of Tomes, Salter, Nichols, and Gomez, LLC.
