More

You can read more of my life experiences if you want to know how I got here.  I was born in Jefferson City, Missouri, and grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, boyhood home of Mark Twain.  When I was 16, I took a correspondence course and passed a government test to obtain a First Class Radio Telephone Operator License, and got a job as an announcer, news reporter and engineer at my dad’s radio station.

I studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Missouri in Columbia, and graduated in 1970 with a BSChE.  Procter & Gamble hired me to work in its International Division in Cincinnati, Ohio.  I was there for about a year when Uncle Sam drafted me for the Viet Nam War.  I spent a year producing television shows for the Signal Corp. at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and another year working on long range patrol rations as a chemical engineer at the U.S. Army Labs in Natick, Massachusetts.

When I got out of the army, I went to law school at the University of Missouri in Columbia, where I made the law review and clerked for the Public Defender.  I graduated with a JD in 1975.  The Federal Communications hired me to come to Washington, DC, and work as an attorney in the Broadcast Division.  After two years, Satellite Business Systems, a partnership of IBM, Comsat and Aetna.  During that time, I earned a Master of Laws in Taxation from Georgetown University in 1982.

Trammel, Rand, Nathan & Lincoln hired me from Satellite Business Systems after two years, and I set up my own practice a year after that.  I merged that firm into Amram, Hahn & Gross where I was the managing partner and worked on real estate tax appeals.  Whiteford, Taylor and Preston hired me from that firm, and I co-founded Thyden Gross & Callahan, LLP, a year later.

I am past president of Metropolitan Washington Mensa and the Collaborative Law Society.  I have served on the Board of Directors of Sheet Metal Manufacturing, Inc., Affiliated Community Counselors, Inc., and the DC Capitols Track and Field Club.  I play racketball and I live in Chevy Chase, Maryland, with my wife, two sons and two cats.

Highest caliber counselor and advisor as well as attorney advocate
Jim Gross provided me the highest caliber, personalized counsel and advice over the course of years, from the time I separated from my spouse through my final divorce and then later regarding a subsequent followup tust and estate matter. He is conscientiously careful and even conservative in the time he bills, thereby removing at least some of the anxiety from an invariably stressful experience. As a lawyer myself I have worked with and against many attorneys, and Jim Gross stands out as the only lawyer I would wholeheartedly recommend without reservation. I can affirm from my own experience and that of friends and colleagues that Jim is knowledgable, responsive and trustworthy to highest degree in his family law field.

Thank you, I am so impressed!
I am extremely pleased that I hired Jim Gross. Before and during our first conversation, I was quite nervous, stressed and unsure what to do and what to even say. His calm demeanor was reassuring and immediately made me feel at ease and protected. He handled my case with professionalism and in the end, I appreciated his no-nonsense way of getting things done. This was my first time hiring a family law/divorce attorney and I was struck by the commitment it takes to represent and work with clients through the bitter end. He heard me and understood what I wanted to accomplish, and he delivered. His level of responsiveness and calmness was simply a godsend and personally inspired me, above and beyond my case. I highly recommend him. In fact, I look forward to getting a copy of Money and Divorce.

Accessible, responsive, realistic and compassionate
I first retained Mr Gross in 2010 for help with my ex-wife’s shenanigans. I was immediately impressed by his straightforward yet reassuring manner. He responded to calls and emails the same day and gently reined me in when my emotions tried to outrun my brain. He worked well with my ex’s attorney, and protected me from her attempts to shape reality to her own design. Since then I have consulted him off and on for various matters and he has always treated me as if I were his only client, and as if we had just spoken a few days earlier. I most highly recommend Mr Gross to anyone wanting to win a case and retain their sanity.

Successfully handled my case!
I contacted several lawyers before finding James, and I did not like how bombastic they were. James is methodical, listens, and works effectively. I had a nasty custody case and a very difficult ex who was out for punishment. James and his colleagues handled his antics with aplomb. They also worked to get us into mediation (something my ex was refusing at first), where we ended up with a mediated agreement that included every single thing I wanted from the beginning. James is highly responsive and never failed to give great advice from someone who has seen it all, or an encouraging word when things seemed bleak. I would recommend him enthusiastically to anyone who needs an excellent family law attorney.

Family law consultation
I've reached out to Mr. Gross on two separate ocassions over the past 4 years with specific custody and visitation questions. I was fully prepared to pay for several hours of his time, but Mr. Gross was able to answer all my questions via email and then over the phone, saving me a lot of time and money. I was able to resolve all issues with my ex-spouse, using Mr. Gross's advice, without having to go to court. I would absolutely use Mr. Gross's services again in the future.

Nothing But the Best!
Jim Gross handled my divorce proceeding flawlessly. His legal advice was right on the mark throughout the process. His nudging of my spouse's attorney was very effective when progress became stalled. Jim exudes an aura of confidence and competence which was very reassuring as the matter moved forward. He was extremely responsive to my questions and concerns and contributed significantly to the favorable outcome of the separation agreement. He is level-headed, unflappable, and was a major calming influence during some stressful times. His knowledge of divorce law is outstanding. I enthusiastically recommend him to potential clients.

Divorce Case
Mr. Gross was excellent throughout my entire case. I had called several other attorneys for consultations and immediately after calling Mr. Gross he provided advice and a clear strategy. I retained him quickly after that. He was always informative throughout the process and I felt his hours billed were very fair. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone. My divorce was not the most complex in nature but I feel Mr. Gross' professionalism and knowledge would let him handle much more complex cases.

Outstanding Service
Jim is an incredibly affable professional. He helped us through a very difficult moment, drafting our Separation Agreement for the purpose of entering the process of divorce. When we met, we got right to it. There was absolutely no padding the cost, and he very graciously answered all of our questions even after he met his obligation to us. I highly recommend, and will most certainly reach out to Jim for any future needs.

Knowledgable, responsive divorce attorney
Divorce is stressful. I hired Mr. Gross because of his motto, "the way to fire is with water." And throughout my sometimes acrimonious divorce, Mr. Gross's calming, kind attitude towards everyone involved diffused many a difficult moment. I appreciated Mr.Gross's keeping me focused when I would get overly emotional. He protected my pocketbook, not letting me utilize him as a therapist. And when things got really sticky, he was the fighter you want in your corner. Calm, patient but intractable in protecting my interests. I appreciated that he returned calls or emails very promptly, even after hours. When you are stressing out over a new issue, it was so helpful to have his expertise weigh in sooner rather than later. I was looking for a fair and equitable divorce while having my interests protected. I am confident this is what was achieved. I would highly recommend Mr. Gross if that is your goal.

Excellent, Knowledgeable & Extremely Responsive
I hired Mr. Jim Gross to help enforce a Separation Agreement contract and mediate. He would respond almost immediately to all of my questions, emails, calls and was always honest without being brutal (but didn't sugarcoat anything either). He was always extremely level headed, courteous and professional when dealing with the opposing lawyer. He always kept me up to date on what was going on. I couldn't of asked for a better lawyer to represent me.

Responsive & Knowledgeable - Can't Go Wrong
I was incredibly thankful for Mr. Gross's experience, responsiveness, and negotiating acumen as he assisted me in negotiating a parenting plan and obtaining greater custody of my son. He didn't waste my time (or money), and cut to the heart of every argument and issue. He is an incredibly valuable ally to have on your side if you have to through this.

First time seeking counsel, and boy, did we make the right decision
I bought Mr. Gross's book, "Fathers' Rights" as a resource to help combat my husband's ex-wife's attempts to control and dictate his visitation with their children. We had not even noticed that the author practiced family law in Maryland, until we got very desperate and went combing through the book for more information. My husband emailed Mr. Gross with an explanation of our situation and our objective. Mr Gross replied within 24 hours with his suggested options and his firms location and rates. We decided to hire his firm and could not have been more pleased. We invested a lot of time and effort, and it was reassuring to feel that the counsel we sought, spent as much time and displayed care and integrity. We were often very emotional and Mr. Gross continued to remind us to remain focused and not to be lead by our emotions. The bottom line is we now have more time with the children, have writeen language to deter thier mother from unnecessary interference with visitation, and are paying a more reasonable amount of Child support.

Making lemonade
Life gives you some lemons every once in a while. But it is nice when in rough times you find someone like James Gross who can help your make lemonade. Unfortunately I find myself going through a separation. I called a few lawyers who tried to steer me toward the adversarial, stressful and legally expensive route. This is despite the fact that I have a pre nuptial and an amicable separation. Luckily I did my howework and found Mr. Gross. As I told him, his stellar reputation is NOT an exageration. He was extremely accommodating, prompt and cordial. I had a seperation agreement in my hands in a little more than 24 hours. I am grateful for his diligence in minimizing my stress level in this diffiuclt time. I highly recommend his legal services.

Jim Gross - Hard working, reliable and trustworthy
Jim Gross is unusual to the extent that he has all of the qualities that you seek in an attorney - he is trustworthy, smart, calm and always available by either email or telephone. Mr. Gross handled and coordinate an out of state post-marital agreement for me that was managed to perfection. His cordial and professional manner with two other coordinating attorneys went a long way to make the process smooth. If you are overwhelmed with emotion and surrounded by caos he is the person to call for legal assistance. His legal fees are excellent for the quality of services that he provides.
