Avi Kumin is a founder and partner at Katz Banks Kumin. For nearly 25 years, Mr. Kumin has been successfully advising employees about their legal rights, resolving difficult situations with employers, and litigating employment claims in court.
Mr. Kumin’s practice focuses on whistleblower protection, sexual harassment and assault, executive negotiations, contractual disputes, discrimination, and retaliation, among other areas of employment law, often in highly complex and contentious situations. He litigates cases nationwide in federal and state courts, as well as in arbitration and administrative proceedings. He also represents employees in filing whistleblower reward tips with the federal government, such as qui tam cases and award tips submitted to the SEC and CFTC.
For his outstanding legal work, he has been included in the annual awards for top employee-side employment lawyers by The Best Lawyers in America every year since 2012; by Super Lawyers every year since 2017; by Washingtonian magazine every year since 2017; by Lawdragon every year since 2020; and since 2021 he has been recognized by Chambers and Partners as one of only eight plaintiff’s employment attorneys in Band 1 of their Washington D.C. rankings.
Mr. Kumin is the current President of the Metropolitan Washington Employment Lawyers Association and serves on both the Executive Board and Board of Directors, and has previously served as Co-Chair of the D.C. Bar Association’s Labor and Employment section. He has lectured on a variety of employment and whistleblower law topics before the American Bar Association, the D.C. Bar Association, the National Employment Lawyers Association, the Federal Bar Association, the American Law Institute, the Anti-Fraud Coalition, and employee and labor groups.
