Biography
Steve has more than 40 years of legal experience in a broad range of areas including commercial and real estate litigation, municipal land use and development, zoning law and code enforcement matters. In recent years he has focused his practice on land use and zoning matters.
Steve recognizes the goal of a land use lawyer is to get the necessary approvals expeditiously and economically so his clients can realize their dreams to start to use their property to their benefit.
Steve has served in public roles at both the State and Local levels in the areas of planning and zoning. For more than 20 years Steve served as Chairman of a Municipal Planning Commission and then as the Chairman of a Municipal Zoning Hearing Board. He was one of the first appointed by then Governor Edward G. Rendell to the Reconstituted Pennsylvania State Planning Board in 2003. Steve’s tenure on the State Planning Board ran for 9 years. Steve has also served on the transition teams of three Mayors of the City of Philadelphia.
When he ran in 2009 to be elected a Judge of the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania, his peers on the Pennsylvania Bar Association Judicial Evaluation Committee rated Steve "Recommended" stating: "He is widely recognized as expert in these areas [land use and zoning issues] and has lectured widely…he is bright, scholarly and has excellent legal writing ability. His excellent temperament and expertise in the area of zoning and land use form the basis for the Commission’s recommendation…"
Steve is a former counsel and past president of Old York Road Temple-Beth Am in Abington, Pennsylvania and a former president of the Huntingdon Valley Library. Steve was a Board Member of the Auerbach Central Agency for Jewish Education. Steve is the former chair of the Real Property Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association and currently serves as a co-chair of its Zoning and Land Use Committee.
Steve is rated "AV" Preeminent as a peer review rating by Lexis-Nexis/Martindale and Hubbell.
Steve is a frequent lecturer for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute on land use and zoning issues.
