We've helped more than 10,000 individuals and businesses obtain Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy relief. We service clients in Buffalo, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Batavia, Jamestown, Olean, Geneva, Corning, and throughout every county in Western New York.

    29 years, 15,000 cases

  2. Foreclosure
    20%
In most cases, people facing foreclosure also have other debt problems. Therefore, as a general rule, we recommend that clients file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy relief. This gives the client up to five years to catch up on delinquent mortgage payments. It also gives them an opportunity to apply for a loan modification without the stress of a foreclosure action or the accrual of unnecessary court costs and legal fees. In appropriate cases, we can defend the foreclosure action without bankruptcy.

    29 years, 2,000 cases

Peter Grubea has been handling consumer and business bankruptcy cases for 27 years. Peter’s first position after graduating law school was with the Law Firm of Aaron, Dautch, Sternberg & Lawson. This position allowed Peter to work closely with a highly respected Chapter 7 bankruptcy trustee and to gain valuable experience in virtually all aspects of New York debtor creditor law. While most consumer bankruptcy attorneys learn the law only from the debtor’s side, Peter had the opportunity to learn the law from both the debtor and creditor perspectives.

In 1997, Peter opened his first office . He quickly gained a reputation as an aggressive advocate for debtor’s rights. During the years that followed, Peter expanded his practice throughout the Buffalo and Rochester areas. He has appeared hundreds of times before the local bankruptcy judges and has been involved in some of the most important local Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases that have clarified the law on such issues as exemption planning, fraudulent conveyances, earnings and bank account exemptions, and Chapter 13 good faith issues. Peter has also been involved in many of the cases that have interpreted the major bankruptcy law changes of 2005 and set local precedent on some of the most important issues, including the all-important mean testing.

Over the years, Peter has been a regular speaker at continuing legal education courses in Western New York. He has spoken alongside the best debtor creditor law attorneys in the area and has even had the honor of sitting on lecture panels with local bankruptcy judges.

Peter believes strongly in giving back to the community by handling bankruptcy cases (and sometimes appeals) for clients who cannot afford to pay for legal services. He has handled many pro bono bankruptcy cases for the Volunteer Lawyers Project, and his firm has received the Erie County Bar Association small-firm award for its pro bono service.

Peter Grubea was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended college at McGill University in Montreal, and obtained his degree from Queens College in New York City. He obtained his law degree from the University at Buffalo in 1993.

To keep things basic I just had my initial consultation with Peter. I am already relieved and feeling better about not only my finances but myself. He is very knowledgeable and I know that I am in good hands from this point forward. If you need help he's your attorney. Hands down!

A Trustworthy Professional
I am a senior professional by trade and my income is close to six figures. I had debts close to $200,000.00. I was feeling very humiliated and embarrassed to file for chapter 13 bankruptcy. I consulted three attorneys before coming across website of Mr. Grubea. First attorney told me I will have to pay $2700.00 upfront fee and due to my high income I will be paying plus of $2300.00 a month. Second attorney told me he will charge $1800 fee and I will be paying little over $1000. Third attorney told that he will charge $1000 upfront fee and I will pay around $800 a monthl. Then I came across Mr. Grubea's website that said I will only pay $300 upfront fee. I scheduled a telephone consultation with Mr Grubea, who explained to me in detail chapter 13 proceedings and how he will be able to help me by keeping monthly payments very low and under $300 a month. The telephone interview was very professional, comforting and assuring that I was talking to a real professional who will take good care of my case. I completed all documentation sent to me by his office. I got very prompt replies to my queries. I had only one trustee meeting where Mr Grubea's assistant came who was also very professional. For the case hearing with the Bankruptcy Judge, Mr Grubea was himself present. Against a number of objections by the Trustee attorney, Mr Grubea, as his calculations and promise, was able to convince the Judge and got my monthly payment to just $208 a month. It made a very comfortable and free of humiliation experience. I would highly recommend, especially professionals with high income, who feel humiliated talking for bankruptcy to consult Mr. Grubea. You will feel surprisingly comfortable and get rid of all worries and tensions, and live a debt free life. Thank you Mr. Grubea. Khan

Chapter 7
I felt very confident after my initial phone consultation with Peter. The process took 5 months from start to finish. The paralegal answered every email I sent and there were many! I felt well represented in court. I recommend Peter and his staff.

Excellent firm for Chapter 13
I just wanted to share my thoughts on The Grubea Law firm. I was facing a foreclosure of my home and needed professional advise. I found Peter Grubea's name in our local telephone book and called and set up a appointment. from that first phone call, all the way thru the chapter 13 process, the Lawyers and Staff at The Grubea Law firm have been great. They were professional and polite. My questions were answered immediately, I always spoke to a person and did not have to leave voicemail's and wait for a response. They also were very compassionate during this very stressful time in my life. That fact alone helped me and my wife get thru this process with the least amount of stress as possible. The fee's that were charged were also very reasonable. I have recommended this law firm to a close family member who also had to file Chapter 13 bankruptcy. I would recommend The Grubea Law-firm to anyone who is facing a Foreclosure and/or Bankruptcy.

Highly recommend this bankruptcy lawyer ...
My case was not an easy one, having survived a bout with cancer and several business setbacks, as well as a prior bankruptcy under the old bankruptcy law, a lawsuit, and potential adversary proceedings (where creditors sue the debtor in bankruptcy court to have the debt deemed non-dischargeable). I consulted two other lawyers and one didn’t have the knowledge to answer my questions and the other moved too slow and wanted way too much money even to open the file (my car was in repossession mode!). Peter Grubea’s office handled and are still handling all these matters with expertise, courtesy and empathy. Bankruptcy law is way too complex for a general practitioner and requires a specialist, and Peter Grubea is one of the most knowledgeable bankruptcy lawyers in New York. His office staff is responsive and polite and his fees are very reasonable considering the time and number of court appearances my case required. I highly recommend his firm for bankruptcy and debtor-creditor problems.

Thank you for the positive comment. . Although we receive many emails thanking us, it is rare to have a client publicly express gratitude. This is because most people do not really want to advertise the fact that they have filed bankruptcy.

The real deal!
My car was repo'd and I sent out a few emails to attorneys looking for help. Peter called me almost right away and he filed an emergency case for me. I go my car back within the day!

Thanks for the positive comment. I remember this recent case well, and I am pleased that the client was able to get the vehicle back so quickly. It is not always easy, but this case went very smoothly.

Very smart and calming
I was so upset about having to file bankruptcy, but Mr. Grubea was very reassuring. I'm still not happy that I have to file but I know it is the best decision and I trust Mr, Grubea completely.

The most incompetent attorney ever.
My wife and I hired mr. Grubea to handle her bankruptcy case. we initially got a phone call from his secretary to set up an appointment to have a telephone consultation with mr. Grubea. he did call on time took a quick overview of our case and we decided to hire him and he wanted a $300 retainer in the form of a money order. We went and obtained the $300 retainer and mailed it to him, which his office promptly lost. after searching for it for almost a month they claimed they couldn't find it so we sent him out another $600 money order this time certified with return receipt. This money order was cashed. I should State for the record that the first money order was never cashed, they just lost it. For the next year, his secretary lost paperwork many many times. my wife faxed in and emailed then every documentation that he requested. All tax info, all employment info in the form of pay stubs, they even asked for my daughter who does not live at home with me pay stubs. his secretary said they never received it even though a read receipt was put on the emails so we know they were opened. after almost a year this back-and-forth we have still yet to speak to mr. Grubea. We dealt almost exclusively with his secretary. the last time I called and I tried to speak with mr. Grubea I was told again we didn't have paperwork and he was not available. at this point I told them it is been a year all I want to do is speak with my attorney that I hired I have never spoke with yet. then they decided I am too demanding and decided to drop us as clients and took two weeks to return our money. my wife gave oral and written permission for me to speak on her behalf to the attorneys on her case. I don't think it was unreasonable to ask to speak to the attorney that I hired and not just his secretary. I also don't think it was unreasonable to ask for a sit-down with the attorney that I hired. I was willing to travel from Rochester to Buffalo to do this. the receptionist that I spoke with besides his secretary told me that I accused them of stealing my money. I informed her that I never said the such I just wanted to meet with the attorney that I hired. Again, I don't think it was unreasonable to ask to speak with the attorney that I had on retainer. So in conclusion, I would NOT recommend mr. Grubea services to anyone unless you want to get run around and have to deal with his secretary for a year. And then if you dare to speak up and ask to speak with the attorney that you hired he will drop you as a client quickly. I am positive he will be on here to defend himself. no matter what he says I would not believe it. In my opinion, he may be a very competent attorney but his staff is terrible.

Very poor guidance.
You will never get to speak to Mr. Grubea about issues regarding poor handling of your case, only to one of his staff that you never met. At the end of my bankruptcy I had to keep calling the office to get them to finalize the bankruptcy by sending a simple form out regarding child support I do not owe, which from what I understand is a formal document required to end all bankruptcies. That took a long time to get done after several phone calls to office staff. After working to establish credit I purchased a new car and think things are going well. Then I receive a bill 8 months after my bankruptcy was finalized for over $78,000 with over $19,000 in interest! After my bankruptcy is finalized and I get this bill from someone I never heard of a lawyer I never met told me he explained student loans can not be discharged in bankruptcy (and in certain circumstance they can Mr. Grubea). I was told when I filed bankruptcy my student loans were dischargeable due to them being sold twice to private lenders and my being offered a $5000.00 loan many years after I graduated to use on anything I wanted not related to educational purposes. I was able to have my student loan discharged during my bankruptcy under the student loan forgiveness program but since it was (supposedly) discharged in bankruptcy I did not qualify. The attorney I dealt with is no longer with the firm and another lawyer I never met tried telling me this was discussed when I filed, it was not. I would have never filed bankruptcy if this wasn't included or at least would have made payments to not get a surprise like this! Now after bankruptcy I owe $20,000.00 more than when I filed. When I tried to rectify this with Mr. Grubea's office I was basically told to pound salt and just pay the bill. Now I have to hire a real lawyer to rectify this. Consultation, advise, and assistance post-discharge is too poor to risk having something like this happen to you. I am by no means rich and can not afford this unforeseen bill. I REPEAT, I WAS NEVER TOLD THIS WAS NOT DISCHARGED, IN FACT I WAS LEAD TO BELIEVE IT WAS. I WAS TOLD "ALL" MY DEBTS WERE CLEARED. DO NOT HIRE THIS FIRM!

Horrible communication and guidance
After unexpectedly losing my job after delivering my youngest son I had no other choice but to file for Chapter 13. I researched the internet and community and was lead to Mr. Grubea's office. He suggested a strategy and payment plan which would be most beneficial to me and that I was pleased with. However, after the initial court appearance I have not been able to get in contact with Mr. Grubea or his staff at all. I have had to communicate with the Trustee himself in order to clarify any errors (and there were many) and adjust any modifications that needed to be made. Emails went unanswered and telephone calls, although answered by the staff, were never returned like they promised to. I paid the attorneys fees for him to guide me through my Chapter 13 and it was the worst decision of my life. My recommendation would be to NOT hire Mr. Grubea's firm. He is absolutely awful.

Do yourself a favor, don't go with this one
After my bankruptcy case was dismissed, he slapped on an extra $450 before he would give me my documents back, it felt like extortion. You never meet them in person. I had one of his attorneys show up in court, didn't even introduce himself and I didn't realize he was representing me until we were in the court process. Very poor communication...took days to get answers to emails. That firm does the absolute minimum for you. I regret ever contacting him and his firm.

Very Disappointed
I've been researching different attorneys and I was very excited to have a consultation with Mr. Grubea. I completed the short questionnaire that stated "Complete the form below and I will provide you with a FREE bankruptcy evaluation within one day" When I did not hear back via phone or e-mail. I went online and scheduled a phone consultation I waited over 30 minutes for the call and when I did not receive one I called the office the receptionist informed me she would text him and he should calling soon. When I still didn't receive a call I decided to try one more time I went back online made another appointment and again, no call! I called the office back, same situation the receptionist said she would reach out and again no call ... Very disappointing and unprofessional. I've had numerous phone consultations, I've completed the preliminary course required to file, all of my documents are in order ... I just wanted a price from his office to file a basic Chapter 7.

One more comment: negative reviews are always discouraging (and unfortunately unavoidable) but should never be viewed as a typical experience. Keep in mind that our office has consulted with nearly 75,000 prospective clients over the past 10 years, and the fact that there are only a handful of negative reviews around the web from this large group of people is a much "louder" message than the negative reviews themselves.

Horrible office
I had a 10 am phone appointment (after the office changed the appointment from 1030 to 10). Waiting until 1020 after no call, I decide to give the office a call. The person on the phone advised me that they didn't want any appointments on a Monday and to reschedule. This would have been fine, If I was notified about this. The firm had no plans on calling me for a cancellation in an appointment. This is very bad business and a very bad first impression. I am now taking my business elsewhere.

I wish to express my apologies to this individual for any inconvenience he experienced. My livelihood depends on satisfied clients, and while some appointments can indeed get delayed by 10 or 15 minutes if I am in court or talking to another client, I would never in a million years intentionally miss a client consultation. The individual who wrote this review is correct that this would be a bad business practice, and I can assure all who read this that it is NOT my practice!
