Matthew C. Hug is the principal attorney at HugLaw, PLLC.  His practice is limited to litigation with an emphasis on personal injury, criminal defense, commercial litigation and appeals.  Mr. Hug's appellate experience is extensive and has argued cases before the NYS Supreme Court Appellate Division, Second, Third and Fourth Departments.  He has had four cases before tne New York State Court of Appeals.

Among the most important cases Mr. Hug has worked on was People v. Weaver, in which he succussefully argued before the NY Court of Appeals that police should not be permitted to place a GPS device on the vehicles of private citizens without a warrant.  This case was reported by numerous news agencies, including the New York Times, ABC News, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Albany Times Union, the Troy Record, WGY, Talk 1300, WNYT and WTEN.  This historic decision was later cited by the United States Supreme Court when they dealt with the issue.

Mr. Hug has represented individuals charged with crimes by the New York State Attorney General's Office and has represented large corporations involved in complex commercial litigation.

Before he opened his own practice, Mr. Hug worked as an Appellate Court Attorney for the New York State Supreme Court, Third Judicial Department.  Prior to working for the Appellate Division, Mr. Hug received his J.D. from Albany Law School, where he graduated summa cum laude (and was in the top 10 of his graduating class).  During his time at Albany Law School, he was one of the first recepients of the Dean Sponsler Fellowship that was awarded  after finishing his first year with the 2nd highest GPA.  He later was awarded the Frank Patterson Prize.  While at Albany Law School, he served as a judicial intern with Hon. George B. Ceresia of the NYS Supreme Court and worked as a summer associate with Bond Schoeneck & King, PLLC in both Albany and Syracuse, New York.

Prior to attending law school, Mr. Hug received a M.A. from the State University at Albany in United States History.  He also has a B.A. in the same discipline from the same institution.  In 2011, Mr. Hug was appointed by the Appellate Division, Third Department as a member of the Committee on Character and Fitness to a five year term.

Professional, Honest and Reliable
Matt is an unbelievably hard worker. He took the time to asses my complicated and unfortunate situation, and his guidance was probably the only secure thing I had at that time in my life. His dedication to his profession has rewarded him with complete knowledge and a great network of connections. Matt is honest, reliable and confident by nature. My case was extremely sensitive, convoluted and serious - and it was dismissed thanks to Matt. I would highly recommend him.

Mr. Hug was great
We had a speeding ticket that he was able to get reduced to a $175 parking tkt w/ no points - his fee was the MOST reasonable of the 8 attys I called around ... He is our man of the hour and we would totally call on him for any issue at this point...

James Flanigan, Chairman, North Greenbush IDA
I chair the North Greenbush Industrial Development Agency (IDA). Matt hug has been our counsel for the past five years. Our IDA operates a Venture Fund and Micro Enterprise Fund, in addition to participating in various community development activities. Our loan funds have provided financing to a variety of businesses ranging from technology start-ups in the Rensselaer Technology Park to small retail establishments. Matt has provided us with solid legal advice. The documents he prepares for our loans are well researched, protect our interests and accommodate the unique circumstances of the companies we work with. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone seeking good legal advice.

Go with Hug
Matthew Charles Hug is a master of his craft. I owe a lot to him, and he did everything he could for me. I didn't have to worry about anything; he just took care of it and kept points off my license and me out of jail. No matter what the next felony I get into next, I know who I'm calling: this guy every time.

Worst attorney in NY
On February 27 2023 Matthew Hug told me I would be receiving my check within two weeks. Long story short its April 18th, still no check. When trying to contact Mr Hug he very rarely answers the phone and eventually sent text messages, assuming my question. I have a long list of complaints about this attorney that I feel are worthy of the attention of the NY state bar Association.
