RESOLVING PEACEFULLY? YES, IT CAN BE DONE!

I’ve been where you are

My own terrible experience with divorce convinced me to pursue what is now the largest part of my law practice. Here’s what happened:

After getting an undergraduate degree in psychology, I worked in leasing and management for a commercial real estate developer. During the next couple of years, I got married, had children, and became a stay-at-home mom during the day. At night, I started law school, stopped and had another child, and then resumed going to law school.

Nowhere to turn

Unfortunately, my relationship with my husband deteriorated steadily. I realized that my marriage wasn’t going to last. I was angry, sad, worried, and miserable. But I didn’t know what to do or where to turn. So like many people in similar situations, I just stayed in the marriage.

The days turned into months. I wasn’t living any kind of life. I knew I didn’t want to remain miserable for the rest of my life. And I also knew that my young children deserved and needed to see their mother happy. Thinking there was no alternative, I did what most people did when they wanted a divorce: I hired a litigator.

It didn’t take long for litigation to take on an ugly life of its own. Our conflicts escalated. Costs quickly mounted. Communication between us shut down. The process dragged on, seemingly with no end in sight.

I knew there was a better way for everyone

While all of this was going on, I recognized that like myself, other people—men, women, and their children—were suffering needlessly. I realized that there had to be a way to divorce peacefully. That’s when I began my extensive training in Divorce Mediation and in Collaborative Divorce.

I’ve been working mostly as a divorce mediator and collaborative attorney for many years. I love my work. I especially enjoy being able to give couples a way to change the dynamic of their relationships: I help them communicate in a positive way. And I help them transition from angry and dysfunctional husbands and wives to cooperative mothers and fathers.

Yes, I’ve been where you are. For years. I was unhappily married, angry, frightened, and sad. Thanks in part to that experience, though, plus my extensive training and years of successful divorce mediation and collaborative practice, I can help ensure that you no longer have to be in the same terrifying place.

With great appreciation
You were amazing in resolving issues with deep emotions at the core. Thank you for saving my family the money that would have been spent on lengthy litigation.

Great Experience!
Sheryl-Ann saved our wedding date and our sanity. My now-husband and I hired separate lawyers to negotiate the prenup. As a result, they made us clash, fight over nothing and get through an insane amount of stress. Both of us wanted to best for each other, but our lawyers kept pushing their agenda and making us fight. I regret that we didn't think about mediation earlier. Less than a week before the wedding, Sheryl-Ann agreed to help us. The process was easy, sane, fair for both of us, and pleasant. Sheryl-Ann is very knowledgeable and experienced. She not only helped us to outline all the terms but fixed mistakes made by our lawyers. Both of us couldn't be happier. Now we're working on the postnup with Sheryl to strengthen our prenup because we signed it right before the ceremony. It was Sheryl's advice, and we couldn't be more thankful for her work and help.

I am a professional colleague of Sheryl-Anne Sastow, and have been impressed by her extensive legal knowledge, professional experience, and most of all her clear-eyed judgement of how to practically resolve marital disputes. She does this in a collaborative way, rather than through protracted conflict, which is a blessing to all of those fortunate enough to seek her wise counsel.

Mediation
Sheryl made an awful situation a very easy & smooth transition. If there was ever a great divorce, she helped my ex wife and I have one. Divorce is not easy in any circumstance, but sheryl worked with us & laid everything out so thoroughly & perfectly that it helped us to get through that tragic moment. And this is with three small children involved. I have recommended Sheryl to every single couple that mentions that they are at that point.

Mediation
Sheryl-Anne made a very difficult experience run a lot smoother than I had thought could be possible. I was fortunate enough to meet her on a train ride into Manhattan one day and we got to talking. After meeting her I realized that mediation with Sheryl-Anne was just what we needed to proceed with our divorce. She listened to both of us and was able to come up with an agreement that eventually suited both our needs. I felt that she genuinely had each of our best interests at heart and was sensitive to our specific needs. When I look back on the process I sincerely think that it could not have gone smoother. Now that it is over I'm pleased to say that my ex husband and I are friends and get along very well and know that our relationship will be positive forever. Had it not been for mediation, with Sheryl-Anne, I may not have been able to say that. So, thank you Sheryl-Anne!!

A find!! Caring, compassionate attorney!
Sheryl-Anne handled my divorce by working together with my wife's attorney and a neutral financial expert. There was no posturing, vindictiveness or muscle flexing. I felt she protected by rights, but at the same time, she was the voice of reason. This was unlike my former attorney who, along with my wife's former attorney, instigated more tension and fighting. Sheryl's help was pratical, pragmatic and sincere. Thank you Sheryl

Relationship: Fellow lawyer in community
"I endorse this lawyer. Sheryl-Anne effectively works with couples dissolving their marriages through a collaborative process that reduces acrimony and expense that usually exists in a litigated divorce. Sheryl-Anne has an outstanding ability to remain neutral during the mediation process, listen to the needs of each party and help them work out a solution. As an advocate during the collaborative process, she also has the ability to advocate for her client in a firm but friendly manner during the collaborative divorce process. She is an outstanding mediator and attorney and I would highly recommend her."
Mediation Attorney | Jul 28
Relationship: Worked together on matter
"Sheryl is a fantastic attorney and an even better mediator. She is devoted, relentless and will not give up. Her secret is understanding the parties needs and eliminating emotion to pave the way for an amicable resolution. In my case, she did it in a matter involving numerous parties, family issues and millions of dollars in dispute. I recommend her wholeheartedly for any dispute that is either about to go in litigation or is already being litigated."
