Go elsewhere

Hired Andrew to represent me in a divorce action against my husband who was an attorney. We discussed the approach and what was to be asked at the deposition. Andrew was fumbling and unprepared seeming to intentionally avoid getting information; more would've been gained in my representing myself. ... I was underrepresented and misinformed; Andrews actions (being the basis of the divorce) appear to have cost me any reasonable settlement. He overcharged (based on his retainer agreement), was condescending and manipulative; he reversed his statements at will. Go elsewhere, very fast.

Great lawyer

I hired Andrew to help me with my custody and divorce cases. He is extremely knowledgeable, and he explained complicated legal matters to me in a way that was easy to understand. Andrew is really responsive when you need to talk to him, and he stays in touch via email and phone calls on a regular bas...is. My cases were very stressful and upsetting, but Andrew always made me feel at ease and confident that I would get what I deserved. Now that my cases are over, I am happy to say that I feel I was represented really well, and I have custody and a divorce settlement that I am comfortable with. I highly recommend Andrew Proto for any legal matter you may have.

My expensive divorce

Although my review might seem okay, allow me to explain why I wouldn't recommend him. I did like him at first, seemed very pleasant, caring, and nice. BUT I hired him to be my divorce attorney. I soon learned that I could end up owing him more for my divorce than what I was getting out of my divorce ...settlement, so I settled things with my ex and once we came to agreement, I closed my case with Mr. Proto. When we started, he said "I'd only get charged when he would open my file to work on my case". That was not the case. I payed $325.00 an hour for two hours to see him sorting 4 copies of my divorce papers, over 60 pages each set. He claimed the computer didn't sort them. The whole meeting should've taken no longer than 30 minutes, and the printing and sorting left up to a clerk at $10 an hour. Oh yeah, and he'd "disappear" while the computer printed. Throughout my ordeal, he'd call me to see how things were going, then I'd get a bill in the mail. He'd e-mail me to "let me know" things, then a bill in the mail. We went to court once, and I think he was more nervous than I was, twirling his pen around his fingers. I felt right there and then like I was with a novice. There really wasn't a whole lot I got from him than I couldn't have gotten from the internet, except for the huge bills. Really, any question cost me $325.00 an hour. I was totally ripped off and almost $10,000 in the hole just for a lot of back and forth of the same. Oh, and of course, he was not in agreement that I settled for what I got, but, hey, if I had continued, I would've owed HIM the house he wanted me to fight for! My advice: When you're going through a stressful divorce and need a good lawyer, ask around, get recommendations.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
