The firm focuses on representing entrepreneurial and growing companies across industries through their entire life cycle - from startup through exit. We handle their entity formation and company structuring, all of their contractual needs, their deals including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and licensing deals, trademark and related intellectual property needs, real estate leasing and purchases, and employment and contractor relationships. We are strategists, negotiators and dealmakers.
Corey is actively and personally involved in the corporate practice area of the firm including sophisticated corporate structuring, high-level strategic advice, and mergers, acquisitions, succession and other deals, while overseeing the firm’s other practice areas. He is a strategist, negotiator and dealmaker.
A successful entrepreneur from the age of 15, Corey is a rarity among attorneys – he both understands and appreciates how business people think. He knows that every business transaction has a window of opportunity that can be missed when faced with untimely legal delays or over-lawyering.
As a member of the New York Chapter of Entrepreneurs’ Organization since 2008, a Board Member since 2010, and Chapter President from July 2014 - June 2016, Corey has been a passionate advocate and leader in the entrepreneurial space. EO has over 11,000 members in over 40 countries and the New York Chapter is the largest in the world which has provided phenomenal contacts and resources for Corey and his clients.
Corey is a frequent speaker at entrepreneurial, business and securities industry conferences and events on many topics including authentic negotiating, deal-making and structuring, entity and platform design, mergers and acquisitions, entrepreneurship, visioning and planning, employee attraction and retention vehicles, authentic conversation about race and building authentic business relationships.
In 2011, New York Enterprise Report honored Corey at its Best Accountants and Attorneys for Growing Businesses Awards with its General Corporate Law and Attorney of the Year awards.
Corey believes his role as counselor is to foster business dealings by assessing and managing risk, not by restricting the options and opportunities of his clients. His ability to serve as a trusted advisor, strategist, and deal maker is a rare and valuable quality that has won the respect and long-term loyalty of his clients.
Corey received his Juris Doctorate from New York University School of Law in 1985, where he was a member of the Annual Survey of American Law. He was admitted to the Bar of the State of New York in 1986 and within 6 years had established his own practice. He ran that firm in various forms through 2010 when he merged his practice into Hamburger Law Firm at which he practiced as a partner for 5 1/2 years. He left there to reestablish his own firm, Kupfer & Associates, PLLC in May of 2015. Prior to starting his own firm, he was first associated with the New York office of Chicago-based Seyfarth, Shaw, Fairweather and Geraldson working primarily on public offerings, private placements and leveraged buyout transactions and labor and employment law matters. He later gained extensive experience in a broader range of corporate and real estate matters through his association with the New York City law firm Herrick, Feinstein.
In addition to EO, Corey has been active in many non-profit and public interest organizations. For example, he was a member of the Board of Directors of Coro New York Leadership Center, an organization dedicated to civic involvement that trains future leaders in the private, public and non-profit sectors, and chaired its annual dinner from 2003 - 2005. He was a co-founder and member of the Board of Directors of 1+1+1=ONE, an organization committed to using art and civic dialogue for positive social change in the areas of race relations and young women’s empowerment. For many years, he was a leader of the New York community of The Hunger Project, an organization that empowers people to end their own hunger. He has also provided pro bono legal services to many other organizations.
Corey is married, travels extensively, golfs poorly and is in the process of writing his first book on Authentic Negotiating, which is expected to be published in the fall of 2015.
