This was a first arrest for me - something I never imagined would happen. The complainant, a woman that I met on only few occasions, made false charges. We learned that she was already involved with others - hostile postings on social media, death threats etc. The case was classified under DV (domestic violence). DV cases are now taken very seriously in most states, with mandatory arrests for any report filed regardless of evidence, making the case tougher since there is a reluctance on the part of the DA's office to dismiss any DV cases. Needless to say, the whole episode was harrowing - arrest, a day in jail, arraignment, court appearances and the looming threat (and anxiety), regardless of how remote, of a possible jail sentence. The witness was not credible, there was zero evidence and she had left the state but I still worried every day. Innocent people are falsely arrested and jailed routinely. John assured me that he doubted this would even go to trial and that PATIENCE would win the day and justice would prevail. It did: “In the interest of justice, the case is dismissed” was music to my ears on my last court appearance. John’s fee was very reasonable for a criminal case - a bureaucratic process that lasted nearly 3 months. We met several times at his office, had 3 court appearances and communicated often. John was never “too busy” to spend the time necessary to go over details of the case, return messages or answer the phone day or night.
