Running SB Sutherland Law has allowed me to leverage the things that excite me most: meeting new people, developing relationships, solving problems, and contributing to the growth of businesses. It has taught me to prioritize value over breadth and to have a strong respect for time.

Here are five points about me and my work that highlight how, as your lawyer, I will be an asset to your company:

1.) I’ve created legal strategies for some of the fastest growing, award-winning companies from around the world, and it’s been a real rush.

2.) My path to becoming an attorney, and staying one, has been anything but traditional. I decided to go to law school six weeks before sitting to write the LSAT. After graduating from one of the top law schools in Canada and taking a role at an elite boutique firm in Toronto, I realized that a “business specialization” in the law was not enough to create value for the types of clients I wanted to attract. I received a full scholarship to complete an international MBA and was attracted by the bright lights outside of Canada. I passed the New York Bar last year and expanded to the U.S.

3.) I am the devil that plays advocate.

4.) As your lawyer, my role is to avoid being the “department of no.” I am very comfortable being the only dissenting voice in the room when I need to be. But that’s not all that I do. It’s my job to build the right legal infrastructure that find solutions, align and serve your company both now and in the future.

5.) In high school, I won the friendship award. I tell you this not because I believe these were my glory days, but because I truly love to work with clients from different backgrounds, industries, and jurisdictions. It’s true my book of business is more heavily weighted in the tech sector, but more than anything, it is my clients’ passion for what they do that unites them.

Working closely with businesses, I have seen that transitions are a matter of life or death for a company. Navigating stages of growth, entering new industries and regulatory environments, negotiation contracts and structuring deals are just a few of those transitional moments that allow me to bring clarity, experience and pragmatism to my representation.
