Robert Van De Veire is a seasoned securities litigator and FINRA arbitration attorney who focuses his practice on representing investors when financial professionals and firms fail to protect their interests. As a partner at Kurta Law, he pursues claims involving breach of fiduciary duty, unsuitable investments, investment fraud, broker misconduct, failure to supervise, forgery, and elder financial exploitation. He brings substantial hearing and trial experience to cases that often turn on complex investment products, disputed records, and determined opposition from well-funded brokerage firms. He has also been approved by the New York State courts for appointment as counsel for incapacitated persons who have been appointed a guardian ad litem.
Robert has taken more than 20 cases to trial, including FINRA arbitrations, as well as both bench and jury trials. He prepares cases with the hearing in mind: identifying what the firm knew, testing the explanation it gave the investor, and building a clear account of how the misconduct caused the loss. That preparation also gives clients a strong position when a case can be resolved before a final decision. His results include multimillion-dollar recoveries in cases involving complex private placements, real estate investment trusts, hedge funds, elder financial abuse, and others.
Before joining Kurta Law, Robert litigated complex civil and professional liability cases at a prestigious AmLaw 200 law firm. Previously, he practiced at a boutique securities arbitration and litigation firm, where he represented investors and defended individuals in SEC and FINRA regulatory matters. His experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants informs how he evaluates defenses, develops evidence, and presents a client’s case.
Robert’s investor practice has drawn coverage in both securities industry publications, as well as the national news outlets, including Investment News, the Los Angeles Times, New York Post, and Bloomberg News.
Robert is a frequent speaker and writer on investor protection, securities litigation, and FINRA arbitration. He has presented to county bar associations, the New York State Bar Association, and the Public Investors Advocate Bar Association (PIABA). His presentations address timely topics, including defeating motions to dismiss under FINRA Rule 12206, cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, strategies for maximizing recoverable damages, financial institution liability for third-party theft, and pig-butchering investment scams targeting older and vulnerable investors. He has also served as an adjunct professor teaching securities arbitration. His writing has appeared in the PIABA Bar Journal and Practising Law Institute materials. He previously served as co-chair of the New York County Lawyers Association’s Securities and Exchanges Committee.
Robert earned his law degree from St. John’s University School of Law, where he participated in its Securities Arbitration Clinic and served on the board of its trial advocacy program. Outside of his busy practice, he has continually focused on giving back by mentoring the next generation of lawyers as a guest lecturer for the St. John’s Securities Arbitration Clinic, a coach for the Polestino Trial Advocacy Institute mock trial program at St. John’s Law, and a mentor for the New York Law School Securities Arbitration Clinic.
He is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey and before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the District of New Jersey.
