Divorce litigation is not enjoyable to say the least. It is messy, painful both financially and emotionally, and in my case it was very protracted, lasting for 4.5 years. In retrospect I have learned the system is broken and if you are looking for any justice or equity you will never find it. If you ...have kids, the system is set up in a way that you cannot get a divorce without resolving custody, finances and all related matters prior to receiving a divorce. I truly believe in this way the system itself encourages the parties to leverage finances and innocent children as bargaining chips in a sick game of attrition. The judges are overworked and don’t care about you or your family. The AFC’s are just doing a job. The system is broken and no one is there to help you. So if you find yourself starting a divorce with kids and you have a contentious spouse my advice would be to realize from day one that there will be no justice. Your goal is to get as swiftly out of the system as possible and minimize you and your families exposure to this toxic system. Saying this, it is all very apparent to me how valuable it is to have the right representation. Not for the “win” per se, but to guide you through this process and not get mired in the emotion, jockeying and toxicity of the system. You need council with a steady hand to advise and guide you to conclusion in this broken system. I had the unique experience of having switched representation halfway through my case and I found my way to Margery Greenberg.
