made the BEST of a BAD situation!
I am very pleased at the services I received from this firm. I was the defendant in a difficult divorce proceeding. Even with legal help from family attorneys, I found it exceedingly difficult to select a lawyer to represent me. McGarry law legal aid helped this process. Even considering that the firm's hourly rate (attorney time) was more than some of the other firms I considered, the retainer and fee structure was pointed out clearly and seemed fair. I live on a relatively low, fixed income. For this reason, retaining any legal assistance was very daunting. I was able to make very good use of a 30 minute free consultation with the attorney who ultimately represented me. The firm helped with my difficulty in ponying up the retainer. The fees were clearly defined and well delineated. Much of the work is done by paralegal assistance, and as such, at a considerably reduced rate. The outcome of my case was favorable. The decisions which I made along the way were wholly my own but made with the experience of 20 years legal work to help me consider my optimum path. I was well informed as to the details but not "nickel and dimed"– the firm is efficient yet thorough with low overhead. I highly recommend McGarry Law Offices and will use this firm again.

My Criminal Case
I was being charged with a serious Class B Felony. Amy was always respectful and listened. After a lot of diligence and her hard work in my case, she got the serious charge dismissed. What a relief it was to have an attorney like her on my side. You helped save my life and my record! Thank you!

Knowledgeable, Efficient, Brilliant – I could not have hired anyone else better!!
Attorney McGarry not only helped me with a very difficult and time sensitive criminal case but also was always there for me speaking as one would a friend, not just a lawyer. Her office was easy to find, clean and her paralegal staff was really nice and helpful. Amy is competent, compassionate, caring and extremely effective in her practice. She answered all of my questions, always called me back or took my call right away, showed up to court on time and got me the best possible outcome for my case. Only a fool represents themselves in the eyes of the law and only a fool would not first hire Amy! Oh and she also has free half hour consultations which was very helpful! Thank you again and would DEFIANTLY refer her to anyone looking for an attorney.

Amy McGarry is a good person and a good attorney.
I have chosen Amy as my attorney for multiple cases involving different issues and areas of the law. I believe that Amy truly cares about her clients and does her best to look out for them. She is also the type of attorney who will tell you what the judge is likely to do, even if you don't want to hear it. Amy doesn't just have knowledge of the law. She is also knowledgeable about the people who are interpreting the law.

Awesome defense attorney
Ms. McGarry did a great job on my criminal case. I got accused by an ex of assault and Ms. McGarry worked hard and got it completely dismissed for me. I would recommend her to anyone that needs a great defense!

Do not recomment
Amy is very smart but is unable to negotiate before the hearing or argue effectively what she knows to be true, She is not very responsive and when asked to file a motion you will need to remind her and will be charged for every reminder. Also, she will indicate she has filed a motion when she has not. I would not recoomend her. She is a nice person but not very organized or able to argue your case.

Lied and witnessed by others.
I hired Amy to represent me in a divorce where federally protected monies as well as Maine laws relating to VA Title 38 Disability money. Both Federal law and Maine law says that VA Disability money is not to be counted as income in a divorce. Amy represented herself as being well versed in the area but said she had a paralegal who she considered an expert in said area. I never saw ANY outside staff when we had office appointments. On the day of my first hearing, she went to a court four cities over. When she finally showed, just under 2 hours late, she was not prepared. (NOTE: I'm a retired paralegal so am well cognizant of how a competent attorney acts!) After the hearing, she met with my sister and me and apologized for being late, for going to the wrong courthouse, and said that she would work my case for free as I had been doing all of the research for the case. Well, a couple of months later she demanded payment for hours that she had said she was going to do for free. When I refused she went to the court and filed documents that she had sealed where I'm sure she lied some more.

Amy said she would get results but instead I got nothing
Amy came off far to strong with my husband and as a result I now have to wait even longer before I can legally see my child again. What should have been a simple PFA hearing turned into Amy grasping for straws and by the end she practically begged the judge to make my husband sign with no result. She does not seem to be respected within the judicial community and as a reault the judge was not willing to work with her whatsoever.

Do Not Hire
Amy Mcgarry was incompetent in not presenting my petition correctly. She never bothered to look up the (2) criteria needed for my particular petiton/case to be heard. The case was dismissed without being heard and I lost visitation. She "padded" the bill with bogus charges and even charged me for the 15min when I went to her opffice to fire her! She never returned phone calls promptly. I had to go to the court house to pick up a copy of the courts decision myself because she did not call me with the outcome that came in 21 days before I knew of it.

Professional misconduct

This lawyer was disciplined by a state licensing authority in 2006.

Reciprocal - Public Reprimand/Admonishment issued in MA, 2006
updated on 03/18/2013

This means that the attorney's misconduct in another state, or jurisdiction, also violated the rules for practicing law in Massachusetts.

Reprimand issued in ME, 2003
updated on 10/01/2015

A reprimand means an attorney did something wrong but may still practice law. The State gives the lawyer a public reprimand in hopes that he or she will not repeat the behavior.

Amy's comment: “A representation was made by me to a court that should not have been made. However, the Board also stated "The panel is convinced of Ms. McGarry's diligence, her devotion to her clients and her fundamental good faith." My lesson was learned and my diligence and devotion have only gotten stronger.”
