John J. Flanagan has successfully litigated and tried cases throughout southern New England and has been involved in matters in the federal courts in various jurisdictions in the United States. He had practiced law for over thirty years He is currently handles matters relating to civil litigation including large scale accident claims, business disputes, trademark claims, contested estate and death claims, failure of insurance coverage, as well as business software disputes, technology and copyright claims, property disputes, contract, shareholder disputes and related business matters. He is admitted to the Bar in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
His practice focuses on the resolution of both complex and straight forward disputes using his experience in negotiations, arbitrations, litigation and trials in order to get effective resolutions to his client’s problems.
He has handled novel issues, including those of first impression, concerning expert testimony, obligations of entrepreneurs under wage act obligations, third party liens effecting settlement proceeds, fraud and undue influence relating to death benefits, issues relating to governmental ethics, and insurance coverage.
Over the years he has tried a diverse variety of cases in various forums before the state courts, federal courts, commissions, tribunals, court annexed arbitration, and the American Arbitration Association. That blended experience is used every day to advocate for his clients’ interests.
Mr. Flanagan has been active in civic affairs as a coach for both sports and school age trial teams. He has been a mentor, speaker and advisor. He was a recipient of the Rhode Island Bar Association’s Pro Bono Publico award and has served on various community boards and organizations, including the Suffolk Law School Alumni Board. He began his public service in a prosecutorial role serving as a Public Interest Attorney enforcing the Rhode Island Conflict of Interest law involving violations of public officials, for conflicts relating to personal gain and their public duties. He has been married to his wife Claudia for over thirty years and together they have raised three children. He resides in Greenville Rhode Island and practices law from offices in Warwick, Rhode Island and Norfolk, Massachusetts in partnership with Emanuel D. Torti, Esq. He is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and Suffolk University Law School Boston, Massachusetts.
