Robert N Meals represented my corporation and myself in a healthcare antitrust lawsuit 1988-1991. We felt that a dozen or so physicians on our hospital staff and our community hospital were conspiring to limited the privileges of family physicians especially in the practice of obstetrical medicine.

While a number of these physicians were friends, our patients were being denied the opportunity to have a family centered childbirth experience, paying extra for unneeded consultations and our practice was unable to recruit other family physicians due to limits that would be placed on their privileges. The crowning blow was when our obstetrical privileges were temporarily suspended without a hearing or adequate explanation.

Bob Meals was our lead attorney. After depositions and interrogatories had proceeded a number of months, the group of physicians and the hospital offered satisfactory recompense and informally agreed to review the limitations on family practice privileges at our 500+ bed hospital. While tour lawsuit was being contested, the hospital decided to open a birthing center along the lines that we had been advocating. Subsequently, the range of privileges offered to family physicians was augmented and a number of of new family physicians were recruited to our group.
