The iconic Knoxville Sunsphere was built in 1982 as the "theme structure" for the World's Fair. A 198-foot tower topped by a 74-foot golden sphere, the Sunsphere has been an enduring symbol of Knoxville long after the World Fair.

The golden color was created with a vinyl film of 24-caret gold on each of the sphere's windows. At the time of the sphere's construction, each of the 360 panes of glass cost $1,000 to manufacture.
