There is a non-zero chance that Jeff will never get around to claiming this profile. He's too busy taking care of people. I took a $20,000 pay cut to work for Jeff, which, back in 1995, was saying something. I wound up getting paid less than my legal secretary at the firm I left. In exchange, I learned that good lawyers who can't always afford to pay you what they think you're worth will always make sure you get fed at lunchtime. I also learned that real, honest people do believe that the Constitution is not a technicality. And that it's worth crying about. I also witnessed Jeff taking a call from a prosecutor who said to the receptionist, "Tell him it's the War Criminal calling." Jeff picked up the phone with laughter in his voice - he doesn't shy away from telling people how strongly he feels about the evils committed in the name of the "War on Drugs," but he can do so in a way that keeps the dialogue going - a skill much in need, too often overlooked, and one that serves his clients well.

Jeff Steinborn is, for me, literally a "guru", and a legend. He's been defending people against the idiotic "War on Drugs" since I was in high school selling them. He's an outspoken man of principle who has managed to merge his philosophy about the law and the role of government into his practice without making concession to commercialism. He is nationally known and respect for his hard work and continual lobbying for the legalization of marijauna and, as far as I'm concerned, has no peer on the horizon. Jeff is warm, congenial, and the kind of guy that people will take pay cuts to work for. When you enter his office, you realize the other attorneys there work "with" him, not so much "for" him. It's more of a legal community than a "law office". The pretentiousness and subtle arrogance you find at other law firms is nowhere to be found when you walk through Jeff's doors. He's one of a vanishing breed in this profession, and although I've not known him a long time, it's been a honor.
