Britten D Sessions has years of experience in every stage of the patent process, including early-stage IP opportunities, strategic preparation and procurement of patents and alignment of patent portfolios with business strategies.
As a patent attorney at Zilka-Kotab PC, he provides patent and licensing-related legal counsel to groups of all sizes – from individual inventors to Fortune 500-sized companies. Mr Sessions has advised on hundreds of patent enforcement, acquisition, licensing and other monetization transactions. To that end, he has assisted companies in monetizing patent assets yielding over $80 million in returns. Additionally, he has assisted in turning unmarketable pending patent portfolios into viable revenue streams supported by seven to eight-digit transactions.
As a professor, Mr Sessions manages the IP department at Lincoln Law School of San Jose. Further, he founded and directs the IP Clinic at Lincoln Law School, which is the only non-ABA school to be accepted into the USPTO clinic program and the only IP clinic in Silicon Valley. He teaches classes relating to IP, patent practice and portfolio strategies. In addition, he has authored several peer-reviewed publications and eight IP-related books.
Mr Sessions has been recognized as a world leading IP Strategist (IAM), and as an lawyer by Super Lawyers and "Top 40 under 40" (Silicon Valley Business Journal). Further, he is chair of the high-technology section of the Santa Clara County Bar Association for the 2015-2016 year. He is also active in the community, providing more than 14 free presentations relating to intellectual property since 2014.
While Mr Sessions specializes in every stage of the patent process, one key differentiator is his expertise in early-stage IP opportunities, which combines his talents of early recognition of winning technology, strategic procurement of enforceable patents and development of licensing-focused business strategies from the ground up.

Britten is one of the most knowledgeable and helpful patent lawyers I have ever encountered. I've found that he has a knack for looking at a complex idea and extracting what can be the basis for a patent. But what sets him apart form the rest is his sensitivity to the budget. He'll get you just wh...

It all started back in December 2013 when I filed a Provisional Patent. I worked on the project and planned to file a Utility Patent before the Provisional Patent expired in December 2014. Due to the complexity and amount of work needed to file a Utility Patent and no prior experience, I started to ...
"I have known Britten for several years. He is absolutely honest and works harder than anyone I know. He is continually expanding his knowledge base and has significantly contributed to the intellectual property community. I have no reservations about referring clients to him and have done so whenever possible."
"Britten is a singular patent and trademark professional of the highest caliber. I have known him for several years. Recently, I worked for him at the IP Clinic at Lincoln Law School of San Jose, California. He is the Director there in addition to working full-time as a patent attorney. Not only is he an exceptionally articulate communicator and organized individual, he has acquired a profoundly keen knowledge of the patent laws, rules and procedures. I sincerely recommend his work and I would not hesitate to send him even the most challenging matters."
"Britten has a solid understanding of patents and intellectual property. He is adept at analyzing and explaining complex concepts in patent law, and is able to view possible outcomes from multiple perspectives. He has excellent interpersonal skills, works well collaboratively, and is able to successfully lead teams of legal professionals. Britten is diligent and methodical in protecting his client’s interests and resolving legal issues."
"I’ve supervised Britten since 2010. During that time, Britten has promptly and thoroughly delivered results, and consistently provided high quality work product. Additionally, Britten has repeatedly taken the initiative to improve his IP skills (often during his own free time) as well as be actively involved in the community. I therefore endorse Britten as a high quality patent attorney."
"I highly recommend Britten for your legal work. I was introduced to Britten when representing a client in a patent sale, where he was representing the buyer, and was impressed enough that I decided I wanted to join his team at the Lincoln Law School IP Clinic, where he is the Director. Having worked with Britten on prosecuting patents at the Clinic, I have no hesitation to recommend him to draft and prosecute your patent applications."
"Britten is a tenacious and effective advocate not only for his clients but for the entire legal community. For example, he created Abraham Lincoln School of Law's IP Clinic, the first non-ABA school to ever be admitted into the USPTO clinic program. It is Northern California's only patent clinic, and one of just two trademark clinics in Northern California. And it is pro-bono based, meaning that it helps the broader community. Several high-profile legal professionals, many of them with far more years of legal experience than Britten, have sought placement as clinic instructors working under Britten. To me, that shows how capable and remarkable Britten is as an attorney. I endorse him without reservation."
"Mr. Sessions is an exceptional talent -- smart, organized, and thoughtful. I am happy to refer to him clients who need patent work."
"I endorse this lawyer. Britten is the Director of the first USPTO approved Patent and Trademark Clinic in Northern California. I have worked closely with him on the Clinic's formation and found him to be a consummate professional and a pleasure to work with."
