I met Michael several times in court, ok more times than I can remember. I was young and dumb and constantly in front of a judge for lots of traffic and misdemeanors. I averaged 25-30 tickets a year. I never lost my license. He would casually talk to me outside the court rooms like we were the best of friends. I will never forget the way he chuckled, gave me a bit of "fatherly' advice, and shook my hand. Later I learned he had represented an aquaintance many times. Only then did I realize just how good he really was. This "aquaintance had, 43 yes 43, felony cases handled by Mike. So it was a no brainer for him to handle my DUI. Can you say reckless expunged after 2 years???? The story about the Colombian drug conspiracy is a true story too.

I met Mike McDonnell in 1974 when he was referred to me by a friend. I had a friend in jail in Kansas for drugs. Mike took the case and the guy ended up with a misdemeanor for multiple felony counts. I retained him in 1978 when a friend of mine was stopped at a roadblock with 2000 pounds of pot in a motor home. He also ended up with a misdemeanor after a rigorous battle by Mr. McDonnell. I retained Mike again in 1981 after being arrested with numerous members of the Columbian government for money laundering and drug trafficking. I was held on a 5 million bail as I was already a fugitive. I was looking at a RICO indictment in Georgia in additional to the money laudering and drug conspiracy. After months of negotiations I plead guilty to one count and was out after 7 months. Mike did more for me than anyone in my in my life. I was arrested in 1991 for a drug conspiracy case and due to the fact that Mike was unavailable I had top hire a local Florida lawyer. Let's just say I had a negative experience with him but still I had a mistrial. So for the second trial I had Mike. We got a directed verdict of NOT GUILTY, a rule 29 motion, which as every attorney will tell you is impossible. I have referred numerous cases to Mike over the years and have never had any of my associates even the least bit unhappy with the results. All of my referrals to Mike have contacted me after the fact thanking me for the referral. Mike is a friend and a confidant as he was able to get my wife one of the longest immunity agreements in US history and allowed her to resume a normal life. The one thing I want to say is that if you hire Mr. McDonnell, listen to him and do what he asks of you. Remember you got yourself into trouble and he knows how to manage the post arrest minefield that so few of us understand.

Mike McDonnell is the best criminal defense lawyer in the State of California, and most likely, the United States. He is the consummate professional. He is THE criminal lawyer that all other criminal lawyers look up too. He is an outstanding trial lawyer, and he commands the respect and the admiration of jurors, judges, clients, witnesses, and court staff in the courtroom, and out of the courtroom. I would refer a family member, friend, or anyone to him, and if I were in trouble with the law, I would be privileged to have him represent me. Mike McDonnell is also the finest person that I have ever known. His word is his bond, and you can take what he says to the bank. He is a mentor to me, and an icon in the field of criminal defense. I am honored to know him, and to call him a colleague.
