I have been an attorney for nearly 30 years. During the past 20 years, I have concentrated in the practice of family law, including divorce, paternity, child custody, visitation, child support, grandparents’ rights, orders of protection and post-decree matters. I am a veteran of many family law cases and trials in which I have represented clients of diverse backgrounds and financial means who have confronted a wide variety of domestic relations issues.
My first job as a lawyer was as an Assistant State’s Attorney in the Public Interest Bureau of the Cook County State's Attorney’s Office, where I served for five years prosecuting child support and consumer fraud cases. I have since been in private practice, mainly as a solo practitioner. I have also served as the Legal Director of Cabrini Green Legal Aid.
Since 1999, I have been approved by the Presiding Judge of the Domestic Relations Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County to represent children involved in custody and visitation disputes between their parents. My appointments have included those as the Child Representative for the children and as the Guardian Ad Litem.
I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and International Studies from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. I earned my law degree from the Columbia Law School in New York City. While attending law school, I was a legal intern at the Legal Aid Society in its housing law program, helping clients fight evictions and improve the living conditions in their apartments. After law school and before joining the State’s Attorney’s Office, I was a tenant union organizer for FHA Tenants United in Chicago, where I organized tenant unions in federally-subsidized housing projects to improve housing conditions and maintain affordable rents for low-income tenants.
I am admitted to the practice of law in Illinois and in New York. I am also admitted to the Federal Trial Bar of the Northern District of Illinois. I am a member of the Chicago Bar Association.
My volunteer activities include serving as a member of the Advisory Board of the Lawndale Christian Legal Center, which represents youths and young adults involved in the juvenile justice system and in the adult criminal courts. I am a volunteer attorney for the Coordinated Advice and Referral Program for Legal Services (CARPLS) in Chicago, where I provide advice and counsel to low-income clients via the CARPLS legal aid hotline in the areas of family law, consumer debt and landlord-tenant matters. I was formerly a volunteer mediator for the Court Facilitator Program of the Circuit Court of Cook County, where I mediated disputes between pro se litigants in post-decree divorce cases. For over ten years, I was a volunteer mediator with the Center for Conflict Resolution in Chicago, where I mediated disputes between neighbors, customers and merchants, tenants and landlords and the like. I also conducted court-adjunct mediations in Housing Court cases and assisted in the training of new mediators.
My pastimes include reading fiction and history, cooking and watching good movies.
