A Short Biography
Doug Bernacchi, 53, of Granger, who got his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University in 1981, his MBA from the University of Notre Dame in 1983, and his law degree from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law in 1990, filed an application today with St. Joseph Superior Court Judicial Nominating Commission for consideration to serve as a St. Joseph County Superior Judge. A vacancy will occur on June 3, 2013, when Judge Scopolitus steps down.
He is licensed to practice before all courts in Indiana, including Indiana’s federal courts, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Western District of Michigan and the Northern District of Illinois as well. He is a member of the St. Joseph County Bar Association, and earned board certified as a bankruptcy specialist by the American Board of Certification. Recently, he has hosted the Michiana Public Access cable television program entitled “Bankruptcy Law Today” on Channel 99 and the Access LaPorte County Channel 3, and served as a radio talk show host on WRHC 106.7FM, Radio Harbor Country community broadcasting in Three Oaks, MI.
Atty. Bernacchi of Granger, has been in private practice with law offices in South Bend, 215 W. 8th Street, Michigan City, IN, and 206 Elkhart Ave, Elkhart, IN. He has practiced law before for courts in more than 20 of Indiana’s 92 counties. Before that he was a 1992 Candidate for 3rd district congressional seat, an adjunct faculty instructor in the criminal justice program at Indiana Tech’s Elkhart and Mishawaka Campuses. In addition to his professional experience as an Indiana criminal and civil attorney, Bernacchi worked eleven years in Chicago as a Floor Trader on the International Monetary Market trading Eurodollar futures and options and serving as a dispute arbitrator deciding member to member disputes for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He also worked one year for Chase in New York City in 1983, and in 2004 he lived and worked in Salt Lake City, UT, before returning to St. Joseph County in 2005. He has 4 children, who attended Holy Cross Grade School in South Bend, and who now are attending Univ. of North Carolina, Indiana University Bloomington, Ball State and Elkhart Central High School.
