Client Review: Clearly one of the best M&A and general corporate lawyers I have ever worked with (and as the GC of a Fortune 100 company I have worked with many). He and his firm (the international Cleary Gottlieb) are by no means inexpensive, but when you need the best for a complicated or novel corporate matter of signficant importance to your company or investment bank, then you need John Byam. There seemed no limit to the areas of law with which he was familiar, including tax, antitrust, intellectual property, inbound investment restrictions (like CFIUS), securities laws -- you name it. He not only spotted but also solved many issues that counsel to our counterparty didn't even seem to know were there. He is also an extremely effective negotiator and saved our company millions of dollars (literally) by thinking strategically about the entire transaction and not just tactically -- he knew what issues involved real dollars and took those to the mat while being more accommodating on issues of much lesser importance to us. And he understood our company's business and finances so well that I thought that he specialized in our industry segment until he told us otherwise.

Bottom line advice: If you can, hire him before your adversary or counterparty does!
