Speed ticket
I was driving on a North Texas highway, maintaining a speed of about 80 mph in a 75 mph zone. Suddenly, I was pulled over by an officer who told me the speed limit had dropped to 45 mph. I was in the left lane of a two-lane highway, and a large truck was in the right lane, which blocked my view of the speed-limit signs. The speed limit decreased very quickly—from 75 to 70 to 55 to 50 to 45 mph—within about one mile. Because the two trucks were driving side-by-side, I did not see the rapid change in speed limits. I have had a clean driving record for the past 16 years with no speeding tickets. I would like to know the best way to handle this situation—should I appear in court, or is it better to hire a lawyer?
You can plead not guilty and go in and speak to a prosecutor about your options first and then hire an attorney if you are not happy with the options. You may be able to get a deferred offer from the prosecutor or you could set for trial or you could appeal, but an attorney might be helpful for some of those options.
