Robert Grant Rathbun

Robert (who goes by Brett to avoid confusion with Robert Rathbun, Sr. who also practices in Virginia) served as our in-house counsel for a number of years. He has an extremely deep and broad grasp of the law with quick and meaningful insights into how the law relates to real world business situation...s. He is one of the few attorneys I have worked with who can give a plain no-nonsense answer to complex questions., coupled with the ability minimize "legalize" while carefully clarifying the available legal options and the risks and liabilities and ramifications associate with each approach in a way that greatly assists the business leadership in making decisions. He works hard to be responsive and provide timely results with a strong "customer service" attitude and he brings an excellent skill set to bear on everything he works on. In over 30 years of experience working with lawyers, I have learned that the role of an in-house counsel is very different the role of an attorney in a law firm. Robert fits the in-house attorney role exceptionally well understands business realities and would be a tremendous asset to any company.

I worked with this attorney when he was in a large New York law firm called Thacher Proffitt and Wood. We had some serious litigation based upon a contract and joint venture we had that threatened our company’s existence. He changed found some weaknesses in their case, changed our stance from lit...igation to settlement and saved us over a million dollars in claims and also saved us half that again in what we expected in attorney’s fees for litigation. He then completely reviewed and rewrote all of our standard agreements and trained our contacts people on how to avoid problems in the future, all at next to nothing in legal fees as part of “the project” as he called it.
