Poor representation

I was an abused wife almost murdered by my husband. I met her when she was assigned to me by Legal Advocates for Abused Women for my order of protection hearing. My husband's attorney approached us before we went into the courtroom to inform us they had filed for divorce. I did not know any attorneys..., so I just hired her on the spot. I met with her a couple of times each week. I was sent home to do countless hours of research and produce documents. I was up until 2:00 a.m. many nights, going to work, and hoping against hope I would not be late getting to her office after work. During the meeting where I was paying dearly as each minute passed she would sit and look at my papers saying "well" followed by a smacking sound and no progress. As time went on things actually started bowing more towards the favor of my husband as my funds dwindled. My husband made a great income. I only had one lump sum I transferred from our joint account into my new one. After that was gone my income was minimal. She required copies of my bank statements so she knew when that lump sum was running dry. I was totally floored when she said that if she could tie her fees to the proceeds of my house she could represent me at this level (and held her hand between shoulder and head height), and if not she could represent me at this level (holding her hand below hip level). That is reprehensible!! You represent or you don't! I fired her and took my files. My new attorney did more for me in 24 hours than she did in months! His fee was also half the hourly charge, and he believes in communication and does not charge for phone calls, a photocopy, or mailing a letter. God bless the person who gave me his name.

Felt like I was doing it on my own

I met Ms. Homeyer through a seminar I took to learn more about setting up a will for myself and my family. After attending the seminar, I decided to contact her and hire her for the task of setting up a will for myself and my children. I had never done anything like this before, so I was trusting h...er to guide me through the process. The first thing she required was that I bring in all my bank statements, brokerage statements, etc. After that, she seemed to give me "tasks" to do to complete the will, and when I was done, I would make another appointment with her. I felt as if I were doing the work and she was the "teacher" correcting my homework. I didn't know any better, so I went along with it. Some years later, I decided to update my will and went on this site to find a different attorney. Thinking that Ms. Homeyer's ways were the "norm," I brought in all my financial statements for the new attorney to look over. She looked at me quizzically and said she had no need to see my specific financial assets. She also said she saw several areas of "concern" in the first will that she would like to address. Unlike my previous experience, I was not doing "tasks" and returning them on a weekly basis to my new attorney. I had a conference with her of about 2 hours; went back to look at the final, rough draft of the documents and then returned to sign the final, "true" copy of the will.
