Martin Harvey Cohen

I like most other people I know have hardly any familiarity with "Elder Law". I knew only that I had a Mother who is 89 and has many of the mental issues that accompany making it to old age. I had a highly unusual family situation due to the fact that there was no next generation to think about or t...o help with our issues. No kids, no grandkids. I'm in my late 60's and not well, my brother is in the same situation. Not a clue how to proceed with making sure there would be a plan to care for my Mother and still have the means to live our daily lives. Marty was able to formulate a way to do what was needed and allay most of my fear and uncertainty. Being an expert in Elder Law and taxation he came up with a plan to make the most of the assets we had in a tax efficient way while makiing certain we could be able to procure the most benefits for my Mother in the future. He is incredibly analytical, and makes sure all the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed. He got in touch with my CPA and Financial Advisor to make sure everyone was on the same page and knew what needed to be done for my family's best interests. He explained what he was doing and how it would help my family achieve the goals we laid out for him. He spent an incredible amount of time with us going over everything we asked him about and helped us to understand how it would all work. Not easy for the average lay person, believe me! There were things that caused my head to spin but in the end I felt comfortable knowing Marty would be there for us when we needed him. Gave me peace of mind I did not have prior to retaining him! He was very understanding and patient with our numerous questions and repeatedly made sure we were comfortable with what he was was doing for us. He is an amazing legal talent and an amazing human being. I had been to other attorneys before and had even paid for the priveledge. I knew when we met Marty he was "The Guy"!! THANKS Marty! We first contacted Martin back in 2003. My parents were elderly and had no wills or other important documents. In addition, my mother was in the early stages of Alzheimer disease. Martin prepared wills and other documents including power of attorney for me. In 2007, my mother's disease had progre...ssed to the point where she needed to be institutionalized. My parents had some assets, but not a lot and nursing home care would have bankrupted them in a year or two. Working with Marty and his associate we were able to qualify my mother for Medicaid while protecting some of my father's assets. In 2010, my dad's health began to deteriorate and we needed to sell his home and put him into an assisted living facility. Marty told us about applying for a VA disability pension for him. We applied and he received the pension. Between the pension and social security, it just about covered the costs of the assisted living facility. Marty also set up an irrevocable trust for the proceeds of the sale of my father's home. In addition to the documents he has prepared, from time to time I need to contact him regarding various elder care issues. He responds quickly and clearly and has helped enormously. For example, my mother's medicaid coverage was ended after one year because we did not reply to their renewal questionnaire. We didn't reply because we didn't receive it - apparently the state had changed their procedures and never sent the questionnaire to the address on file. Marty and one of his associates intervened, contacted the state and had my mother's medicaid reestablished without any gaps in coverage. My father recently passed away and various issues have come up around benefits that my mother may be entitled to. I continue to work with Marty to handle these things

Mr. Cohen helped me through a very difficult time, when addressing medicaid/medicare/estate planning with regard to my parents. Although, I am a lawyer, in the community, I had no idea about these issues. Mr. Cohen was patient, thorough, informed, knowlegeble and expeditious. I will continue to se...nd clients to him.
