A large portion of my practice is criminal appeals. I have handled hundreds of appeals in the Washington state courts and appeals in the U.S. Ninth Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court. I am counsel of record in 70 published opinions.

Criminal Defense 34%

I represent people in investigations, trials, appeals, and post-conviction relief in federal and state courts. I have tried more than 100 jury trials. I have sought clemency from the governor and parole from the Indeterminate Sentence Review Board. I have represented those accused as well as witnesses seeking advice of counsel in a criminal matter. I help anyone navigate the criminal justice system.

Violent Crime 32%

Much of my practice deals with interpersonal violence -- assaults, sexual assaults, rapes, homicides. I have worked hard to change the law to acknowledge human emotions and relationships of all kinds.

A good attorney is a liberator

Yes, I lost my case at trial. I was treated unjustly. Then I found Ms. Nussbaum. She won my appeal. The case was very hard, but she won it. She gave back to me my innocence. In my mind, she gave me back my life and peace. I will never forget it. Thank you.

Thorough, Competent, Well Connected and Aggressive

I needed an attorney to respond to a contended violation of my community custody conditions. I hired Ms. Nussbaum to represent me at the violation hearing. She is incredibly thorough and attends to every detail. Nothing is left to chance. She knows the prosecutor's office well and after several conta...cts with the prosecutor, including in person at Ms. Nussbaum's office, the issue was resolved without a hearing and favorable to myself. I trust my life and my freedom to Ms. Nussbaum's thorough competency. She is principled, transparent and highly effective. I always know what is going on and where I stand. Highly recommended.

Very skilled, professional attorney

Lenell represented me in an appeal case. She has a wealth of experience and knowledge. She seems to be well connected and well liked by her colleages. I was very happy with the result of my case and would recommend her to family and friends.

Superlatives Do Not Do Justice for Lenell Nussbaum's Talents

I am a lawyer. I never dreamed I'd be the client of a criminal defense attorney ..... until I was falsely accused by the police of committing a misdemeanor crime, arrested, and thrown in jail. Given the lies in the police reports, I was not surprised when the prosecution went forward. A lawyer fr...iend referred me to Lenell. She did a fantastic job. Lenell investigated the facts, got to the bottom of things, and smelled a rat. She persuaded the trial court to dismiss the criminal charge. The court concluded that the State had violated my constitutional rights to due process. The court found that the police had purposefully destroyed material exculpatory evidence -- the airport video of the purported crime itself! The court held that I could not receive a fair trial. When the prosecution would not accept defeat and appealed, Lenell persuaded the appellate court to affirm the dismissal. Lenell does not get rattled by the little annoyances. She is one cool cucumber. But she also has a great bedside manner that kept me calm and centered through one of the worst experiences of my life. I cannot say enough good things about her analytical and writing ability. Her briefs are clear, concise, and to the point. She marshals the facts and law in a way that only a lawyer, as client, can appreciate. Did I mention that she presents herself very favorably in oral argument? I could go on all day, but in short, she possesses – and uses – all of the skills of the forceful, competent, and persuasive legal advocate she is. You will be lucky to have her on your side. I know I was.

"Lennell Nussbaum is absolutely brilliant. She always has a fresh way of looking at things that always makes me regret that I didn't think of her answer first. She's one of those lawyers that other lawyers seek out for advice and second opinions. She's that good. If I ever needed reprsentation, she is on my list of attorneys that I'd allow to represent me."

"Lenell is everything anyone would want from an experienced, competent Criminal Defense and Appellate lawyer. Smart, resourceful, tenacious. She has the respect of the entire criminal justice community and re-earns it every day with her numerous contributions to that community. She not only fights hard every day for her clients, she also shapes the legal landscape for all of us in the field with her practice before the Supreme Court. I can't recommend her highly enough."

"I endorse this lawyer. I do so without qualification. As a colleague she has be invaluable in anticipating Appellant issues that are so often established at the trial court level, or not at all. In that regard, I would encourage a reader to consult 121 Wn. App. 21. That case tells its own story. Lennell has a well hond abilty to find out and build upon the precise factual issues that, when effectively presented, carry with them the promise of an acquital or, if involving an appeal, of a reversal. She is an excellant lawyer."

"Lenell is a fabulous attorney. This year she took on the question of whether youth should be sentenced to life without parole when charged as adults. Her dedication in In re McNeil and Rice is an example of the hard work that she does for all of her clients. We are lucky to have her in our community."
