Matthew Kearney

Matthew Kearney is a prosecutor with the California Department of Justice. He is also an international human rights advocate. During his career (both before and after law school), Matthew has worked for or with numerous nonprofit and intergovernmental organizations such as the United Nations, ECHR, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International. He has lived, worked or traveled in over 18 countries and has assisted victims of rape, child abuse, domestic violence, gender-based violence, torture, sex trafficking, modern-day slavery, and state sponsored violence or oppression. Matthew is passionate about criminal law generally and international criminal law specifically. He is always looking for ways to further his interests.

Matthew earned a Bachelor's of Art, with honors, in German literature with minors in philosophy and Russian from Brigham Young University. He has studied abroad at the University of Bonn, and the Akademie für internationale Bildung. Matthew received a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Davis School of Law, where he was nominated to the Order of the Barristers, and the recipient of the Pritikin International Law Writing Award. He was also Senior Articles Editor of the UC Davis Journal of International Law and Policy, a Problem Writing Co-Chair on the Moot Court Honors Board, and a member of the Humanitarian Aid Legal Organization (HALO). In addition to German, Matthew is fluent in Serbo-Croatian, having lived in Serbia for two years. He enjoys great outdoor adventures, pianos of all vintages, and eating a perfectly toasted marshmallow. He is also a self-proclaimed root beer aficionado.
