Amelia founded Lahn Law LLC in 2014 in order to help college students navigate the consequential and often confusing academic, personal, and Title IX (sexual assault) university conduct process. Her practice now also includes general criminal defense; family law; protection orders; representing IU faculty and staff in employment-related administrative proceedings; and helping K-12 students with suspension or similar disciplinary action.
Ms. Lahn was drawn to representing college students through her own work as a hearing officer in the Indiana University Office of Student Conduct (then called the Office of Student Ethics) from 2012-2014, where she charged and adjudicated student cases relating to academic integrity, alcohol, drugs, and other violations of the Indiana University Code of Conduct. As part of her job, Amelia completed the sexual assault hearing officer training required for those staff members who sit on sexual assault hearing panels.
A native and life-long resident of Monroe County, Amelia is active in her community, having served on the boards of directors of Girls, Inc.; Middle Way House; Bloomington Montessori School; and the Lotus Music Festival. She has also been a volunteer attorney for District 10 Pro Bono and the Maurer School of Law Protective Order Project. While in Law School, Amelia was co-chair of the Women’s Law Caucus annual fundraising auction and law clerk for the Indianapolis firm of Betz & Blevins.
While a staff member at I.U., Amelia created and taught “Orientation to College Life” at I.U. to help ease the transition into college life for international students, first generation college students, adult students returning to school after hiatus, or anyone who wanted guidance on how to make the most of their I.U. experience. She has also been a guest lecturer at the University on topics such as representing mentally impaired clients in criminal matters; starting and running a criminal practice; and the evolving status of women in the legal profession. She has been a guest on WFIU’s Noon Edition show on the topic of Title IX investigations. Additionally, she was sought out by Indiana Daily Student reporters when they did a three part series on the Title IX process at I.U,: .
Amelia was honored to be named a 2018 “Rising Star” by the SuperLawyers publication in the area of general criminal practice— one of only two in the entire southern half of the state. Superlawyers.com/indiana/bloomington/lawyer/amelia-lahn
