Not a bull dog, will not fight for you.

I hired Mr. Hemmat to assist me immediately after I had been served with initial Divorce papers. My ex is a particularly nasty, spiteful creature and he did a good job escalating everyone's emotions with his slanderous and baseless accusations against me and my family. Mr. Hemmat frankly did not have... the stomach to separate emotional issues from rational issues at hand. I had suffered a few instances of domestic violence at the hands of my ex and Mr. Hemmat failed to provide me with counsel to physically protect myself (Protection Orders, Restraining Orders, No Contact, etc). Mr. Hemmat was unable to outline a clear strategy with a number of options by which we could proceed. I always felt like we were on the back foot, always reacting to what came our way. My ex's attorney was a bulldog and would continue to shower us with nonsense and Mr. Hemmat could not contribute to a strong response. Mr. Hemmat attempted to help me with the issue of settling a property dispute between me and my ex. It turns out he was not very well versed in matters of real estate litigation (as it pertains to a divorce, would've thought this was a common issue to be handled!). He ended up billing me for several hours of consult time with a real estate attorney who was in his office vicinity. I ended up asking Mr. Hemmat to withdraw so I could find a more aggressive lawyer. He is bright and kind, there's no doubt, but if you have a messy divorce or a complicated legal matter involving Real Estate, I would not recommend him.

It is vitally important to maintain a strong relationship between a client and attorney, particularly during contentious and emotional litigation. Breakdowns in communication can limit the effectiveness of any office's legal representation. Every client has a right to retain an attorney that matches his or her outlook, approach and perspective. This being stated, I believe that aggressive ‘bulldog’ attorneys often cause greater damage to a client’s interest by unnecessarily inflaming disputes, thus making it more difficult to resolve differences and reach an affordable and reasonable agreement. Needlessly aggressive legal strategies can often incur enormous legal bills for little return, and I take pride in my cost-conscious and client-centered representation. I am also keenly aware that parties often need to cooperate with another in the future, frequently for many years when they have young children. My job as an attorney is never to simply attack the opposition, but to respond while guarding a client’s long-term goals and best preserving their financial resources. Sometimes, that requires a more tactful and nuanced approach.

Relationship: Worked together on matter

"Mr. Hemmat kindly agreed to serve as settlement master in a somewhat tricky contested dissolution I was involved with. He was thoughtful, persistent and ultimately very helpful in bringing the matter to a successful conclusion. I give him a hearty endorsement."

Relationship: Worked together on matter

"Steven and I worked together as opposing counsel for parents who had been at loggerheads in a child relocation matter due to years of acrimony between the parents. The acrimony had essentially made it so the parents were unable to communicate with each other or trust each other. I was impressed with Steven's ethics, care, patience, and professionalism in guiding the parties to a satisfactory resolution of all claims and setting the parents up for success going forward. I look forward to working with Steven again, and certainly would refer him to potential clients in need of an excellent family law attorney."

Relationship: Worked together on matter

"I worked together with Steve on a difficult parentage case and was impressed by his knowledge, experience, and client skills. Steve was clearly familiar with every issue in the case, as well as opposing counsel and the judge. Although he was busy, he communicated with his client on a daily basis. I have great confidence in Steve, and refer clients to him on a regular basis."
