Set the bar for what a General Counsel should be

Matt was our General Counsel, and he set a high bar for what that role can be. What set him apart wasn't just his legal chops — it was how he operated inside the organization. He built genuine relationships across every level of the company, from the board room to the front line, and people trusted h...im because he earned it, not because of his title. He had a real gift for working with our board, but not in the obvious way. Rather than making his case in the room, he'd build alignment ahead of time through one-on-one conversations, using the trust he'd built with individual board members to help shift entrenched positions toward a better outcome. It was quiet, effective influence that never made the moment about him, and it made a real difference at some pivotal points for the company. He was also relentless — in the best way — about managing costs with our outside counsel and external partners. He never treated legal spend as a fixed cost; he pushed, negotiated, and found efficiencies that saved us real money without ever compromising the quality of representation we got. On the litigation side, he delivered wins that mattered, at times when the stakes were genuinely high for the business. He combined sound judgment with the kind of resolve you want in your General Counsel when things get hard. On top of all of that, he's just a genuinely good person to work with — thoughtful, low-ego, and someone people wanted to work with, not just had to. I'd work with Matt again without a second thought, and I recommend him without reservation.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
