A trusted advisor referred us to David Bearman so we scheduled a consultation to discuss our 1998 revocable family trust. We wanted to add a special needs clause to benefit one of our sons who had sustained brain damage. David reviewed our trust while we were in his office. Imagine our surprise w...hen he pointed out that our old trust exposed us to a potential $69,000 Oregon State income tax. Since the main purpose of a trust is to shelter one's assets from excess taxation and probate expenses, we were dismayed. We immediately engaged attorney Bearman to redraft our trust. He sent us home with a "homework" bundle of forms to complete so our personal wishes and financial needs would be reflected in the new trust. Then he gave us another "homework" package with personalized forms and detailed instructions on how to transfer our various assets into the trust. What a brilliant courtesy as this is often the most intimidating part of funding a new trust. Needless to say, we are thrilled with David Bearman's expertise, efficiency and concern for our welfare. As for the bill, it was less than his initial estimate and worth every penny for the peace of mind and asset protection. One more comment: David is quite witty and full of anecdotes that explain the need for various trust clauses so expect to be entertained when you engage his services.
