Karen has been my patent attorney for over 10 years now. The knowledge Karen has when it comes to patents is unmatched in my opinion. I have filed over 15 patents with her, of those patents over 10 have been issued and some are still pending. She is honest and trustworthy, I cannot recommend her enough.
She always answers my calls in timely fashion and her prices are fair. She has also shot down many of my ideas saving thousands of dollars that could have been wasted.
Karen far exceeded our expectations in describing our technology for patent consideration. Her ability to ask great questions. Then apply those answers, thoughts and ideas along with our poorly written abstract into a clear vision for our patent was impressive. We would highly recommend her skills to anyone! Thank you Karen.
Preparation and Prosecution of patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In other words, I help clients write patent applications and handle the process of obtaining a patent.
Mostly I provide analysis and opinions. For example, a client may ask me to provide a noninfringement opinion if they receive notice from a patent holder that they infringe a patent. I would also review competitors' products to determine if they infringe a client's patent.
Although I do not practice copyright, trademark, or other forms of intellectual property law, I do help clients identify issues in many intellectual property fields.
31 years
With approximately thirty years of experience in patent prosecution (the process of getting a patent application), I take pride in being able to offer creative solutions to clients' real needs. I will work with you to meet your patent goals.
I help obtain patent protection for mechanical devices (e.g. medical, tools, toys), software, business methods, and electrical apparatus. My services range from writing the patent application, to responding to Office actions from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, to obtaining and maintaining an issued patent. I also help clients determine patentability and whether their product would infringe the intellectual property of others.
I am licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as well as in Oregon and California. I represent clients from all over the world.

Karen was very professional in helping me understand patent law
Karen was kind enough to take the time to help me understand how patent law affected my business. She was professional and courteous and I would recommend her to anyone that was in the same situation as I.

I recommend Karen any chance I can!
Karen is a wonderful attorney that I recommend any chance I can. I have worked with her several times and throughout our work together she was very helpful - educating me about the formal patent process, the most effective way to protect my ideas and has always been very willing to teach me how to do some of the initial research myself - I am always very appreciative of attorneys who are willing to share knowledge that will save money, time and potential legal headaches in the future.

Professional Service - Patent Applications
The professional service provided by Karen Dana Oster has been beyond my expectations. I have worked with other law firms in the past but have not experienced the care and professionalism given by Ms. Oster.

Assisted me with the patent process for a new product that I had invented
I found Karen through an inventor's group on LinkedIn network. After our initial conversation, I was very impressed with her knowledge of the patent process and the way she described the various options available to me. I worked remote with her from the Chicago area and she was always very responsive and respectful of my time and my questions/requests. Her rates are very reasonable and she does not nickle/dime you for every question as it is built into your costs. I would highly recommend her to friends and colleagues.

Comprehensive and thrifty.
Karen helped steer me away from some pitfalls that were recommended by large firms. She explained everything to me and assured me that we would get the same results with a simpler approach. That is how it worked in my case. Would I recommend her services? You bet I do it whenever I am asked. Mike Hyneman / KoneZone Trolling Flasher

"I own a small business designing software for patent attorneys (as well as being a patent attorney myself) and I frequently use Karen as a reference when trying to decipher the nuances of IP Law and the operations of the US PTO. She's a very clear thinker and really knows her stuff, and I have greatly benefited from her input over the past ten years."

"Karen Oster gives good business advice. She knows how to assess a client's needs, whether the client is an individual person or a large corporation. Karen's patent documents are notable for their exquisite clarity, and her track record of successes is impressive. Her ability to stimulate a company's innovation and to provide a valuable Intellectual Property portfolio can be summed up in two words: "impressive" and "reliable.""
