I'll fire you if you don't play my game

We approached Mr. Combellack because of a 8.0 AVVO rating. Mr. Combellack informed us over the phone that he would charge $300 an hour and would be employing a legal assistant who could save us a great deal of money. When I mentioned this arrangement to a close attorney friend after Mr. Combellack a...ccepted a $500 retainer check, my friend advised me to stay away. "He'll talk with the assistant who will talk in turn with him unnecessarily, and the fees will escalate rapidly." Based upon this legal recommendation we refused to play Mr. Combellack's game by directly contacting the other party although we kept Mr. Combellack fully informed of our efforts at settlement. In our extensive experience mediation is a reasonable way to settle problems without attorneys being present. Mr. Combellack then fired us without explanation and/or stated cause, and then promised to return the $500 retainer. My wife and I are reasonably wealthy (20 million plus) and have never had an experience like this in over 60 years of practicing business. No attorney has ever fired us before or treated us with such contempt. Repeated requests for documentation were ignored. Beware of this man please. Employ him at your risk.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
