I was passing through the community of Angel's Camp, California in Feb of 2022 when I came up behind what I believed to be a slow moving vehicle driven by someone who was elderly. After following for 3/4 of a mile or so, I slowly moved left into a turning lane and passed the vehicle. Turns out that ...that SUV was driven by Calaveras County Sheriff's officer who was driving in an unmarked vehicle. She turned on her lights, pulled me over, and handed me a misdemeanor charge for reckless driving. To say that I was a bit stunned would be an understatement. Fortuitously, during my first court hearing, I was assigned April Asbell as my attorney. Within a few days, I spoke with her and found her to be on-point, intelligent, and professional. She quickly understood my predicament and asked the relevant questions. As equally important as her command of the law was a feeling that I was dealing with someone who was warm-hearted. She told me she would be speaking with the DA's office in the days ahead and would get back to me. About a week later she indeed got back to me and had my charge reduced to crossing double yellow lines (which is what I was really guilty of). I ended up paying a $141 fine and am thankful for April's negotiating ability. The few times that my extended family has had need for an attorney have usually in poor experiences. My encounter with April was completely the opposite. She also gives her main cell number to clients and is not the type of attorney that you never hear back from. Her excellent communication skills and intelligence mean that anyone facing a charge in Calaveras County are likely to experience a more proficuous outcome. I would highly recommend her to others and would consult with her if someone in my own family needed legal help.
