About Patrick

Learn Patrick’s areas of practice.

Patrick Valencia is VIB Law’s senior partner as well as a founding member of the law firm.

Mr. Valencia has long-standing ties in the Bay Area, having received undergraduate and law degrees from Santa Clara University. These strong local ties allow him access to a wide variety of contacts within the criminal justice system to use on behalf of his clients.

Mr. Valencia has established credibility with the District Attorney’s office, having worked for seven years with the Santa Clara County Juvenile Probation Department. That experience helped him develop keen insight into the Juvenile Justice System.

Since his admission to the Bar in 1983, Mr. Valencia has successfully defended thousands of minors charged with crimes. In fact, he was named, “Top Juvenile Defense Attorney” by San Jose Magazine in 2002. Mr. Valencia has also handled numerous high-profile juvenile justice cases.

Valencia’s expertise in Juvenile Crimes has long been recognized by the local court system. He has served as a Judge Pro Tempore and has presided over trials in both Juvenile Delinquency cases as well as Juvenile Dependency cases.

Mr. Valencia handles most of VIB Law’s Juvenile Crimes cases. But, like both of his partners, he has experience handling every type of case, ranging from simple petty thefts to complicated homicide and “three strikes” cases. His 31 years of experience in criminal defense provide him with the agility, perspective, and tenacity needed to navigate the toughest cases in and out of the courtroom.

Mr. Valencia began practicing law in 1983, as a sports agent. He represented and worked with several local college athletes in negotiating tryouts and roster spots for various professional teams including teams in the NFL. In the course of this work, he began to represent athletes who found themselves on the wrong side of the law. He discovered he had a real talent and passion for criminal defense.

Mr. Valencia firmly believes that defending the rights of those accused of a crime protects all of us and furthers the idea of a free society. Toward that end, he pursued the study of International Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, and completed an internship at the Henri Dunant Institute in Geneva, Switzerland.

Mr. Valencia has developed a nuanced understanding of various professional boards and their licensing and disciplinary procedures. He has represented hundreds of nurses, medical doctors, real estate agents, and various other professionals in a wide variety of disciplinary proceedings. Mr. Valencia finds helping professionals keep their career dreams on track to be one of the most rewarding aspects of his job.

Mr. Valencia continues to enjoy sports, both as a participant and a spectator. He has two daughters whom he encourages to excel in academics and share his interest in sports. Valencia

Valencia represents clients throughout Northern California. On a regular basis, he tries cases in the Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Alameda County courthouses, Mr. Valencia is in charge of VIB Law’s San Francisco branch as well as all cases in the San Francisco County courthouse.

First time DUI
Patrick was professional, calm, and thoughtful in navigating my case and getting my DUI downgraded to a much more favorable plea. I cannot thank him enough.

EXCELLENT
I recently had to hire an attorney for my son and was referred to Patrick Valencia. I was a bit concerned mid way because I didn’t feel like there was enough communication however he got the job done getting multiple charges dropped. My son is doing community services and paying a minimum fine.

Bench Warrants (2)
After 5 grueling years my Partners Immigration case is finally coming to a conclusion. Old records showed 2-Bench Warrants from the 90's still outstanding and our attorney wanted resolution before our next Immigration hearing. My Partner is sick has not worked in 10+ years, we live in Palm Springs and he cannot drive. I have an 8 year old car! Patrick was able to settle BOTH of these warrants, one was for $50,000, the other $1,000 in a very short time. AMAZING. We could not have done it without his help and his great staff! I am so very grateful for his help.

Excellent Attorney
My case was very complicated by the fact that I had to take into serious consideration of the immigration consequences as I am not a citizen. Throughout my case, Mr Valencia was very attentive to exactly what I needed and was always able to find a way to help me out. He was willing to work with my immigration attorneys and accommodate various requests of mine to help ease the negative impact on other aspects of my life, as in my case, things are so much entangled. I highly recommend Mr. Valencia, especially if you have immigration matters to consider. On top of that, the entire VIB law firm operates in a highly efficient and professional manner. The assistants are always courteous and helpful. They always sought to it that my request were fulfilled or related to the attorney in a timely fashion.

Domestic Violence Case Dropped.
Being a law abiding citizen and having never been in trouble with the law, I found myself being arrested after an argument i had with my Fiance, this argument was really not any different from the other 10 heated arguments we have had over 4 years, I have never once hit her, in fact she has hit me on few occasions, this time out of spite she called the Police. Even though there had been no violence, an over zealous SJPD decided to book me, for, Criminal Language and False Imprisonment, (apparently standing in front of someone while talking, even though there are 2 exits, is just that!). Off I went to jail, spent the night and bailed out the next night, my Ex would not give me my car keys or wallet and they slap an automatic restraining order for 4 days, so I was homeless as we lived together, luckily a friend picked me up and eventually got my stuff 2 days later through a third party. After this trauma and a week of wondering what to do, I started to call a few lawyers. I am on a Green Card and my citizenship would be hard to get with these charges. After speaking to a few people, they really did not have any clear solutions or plans and I was feeling more bewildered. Final call to Patrick, explained the situation and he laid out a clear and concise plan of action, In that moment I knew he was the guy and hired him. I spoke to him on many occasions, not being a Pro-Criminal i was jittery and panicked and he made me feel calm and more collected. His 2 pronged attack to quash it, before it went to court, was to speak to the DA and also my Ex to find out what she wanted to do, she did not want this to go to trial or press charges and I actually think she did not realise the gravity of what she had done. The problem in San Jose is the DA takes these cases seriously and usually presses ahead anyway, which is right for actual abusers, but if like me, your a guy thats innocent, its real hairy. Patrick spoke to the DA and Assistants on numerous occasions and eventually got the case dropped. He has open lines of communication, which is important in these situation's. You only need to speak to him for 5 minutes and you can tell he is an intelligent guy, who has deep knowledge of the law and would be a powerhouse in the actual courtroom, obviously I highly recommend him.

Great Lawyers
I have referred numerous cases to Valencia and Ippolito and my clients have always responded that they received caring and capable service. Obviously, criminal defense situations are quite sensitive, and the team at Valencia and Ippolito performed magnificently. I refer cases to them regularly and always receive very positive responses.

"I endorse this lawyer. As opposing counsel, I have had many dealings with Pat. I have found him to be a strong advocate for his client, yet reasonable in his demands. He is always seeking the best possible outcome for his client. In those cases where we could not find a middle ground, he was not afraid to seek a jury trial.
