Appalling experience setting an estate

I had an appalling customer service experience working with Kevin Courtney over the last eight months to settle my dad’s estate. I chose him only because my dad had used his firm to update estate planning documents. I deeply regret my decision as, through Mr. Courtney’s negligence and awful communica...tion, he made this already difficult process even MORE stressful and arduous. Mr. Courtney failed to adhere to the clearly defined terms of his engagement letter: to send me monthly statements. Therefore I was unpleasantly surprised to get a bill at the end for nearly double the original cost estimate. He also ignored my explicit request to get an account statement a month earlier. As trustee, I needed this information so I could properly maintain a cash reserve for unexpected expenses. Furthermore, he KNEW I was gathering information on outstanding debts and still did not mention his outstanding bill. Whether negligence, apathy, or spite I cannot say; none of these are remotely acceptable. When I asked Mr. Courtney why he did the above, he stonewalled and dodged the question. He said tersely he “waited until completion”. This is a shameful lack of understanding what his client needs and unwillingness to accept responsibility for falling short. I could go on with other examples, but will stop there. Needless to say I would never work with Mr. Courtney again, and would definitely not recommend him to others.

Amazing Lawyer/man

I have had dealing with Mr. Courtney for well over 15 years. So issues bigger than others. All I know for sure is I can always call him. He gets back to me right away and has always given me the best advise. My parents have used him and couldn't be happier. My daughter got professional direction from... him and things turned out very well for her as well. There is no one else I would use even if we didn't live in this town.

DNR , Do Not Return

He handled my parents trust and he really lacked when it came to explaining terminology and the process to follow after our folks died. He was quite rude to them, that's what irritated me the most. He wouldn't give us the time of day after my folks died, but was quick to ask for a huge retainer. We d...id a lot of homework, asked the banks, real estate agents and IRS a lot of questions, we saved ourselves another run in with this guy and lining his pockets.

Wouldn't use this lawyer if you paid me money!

When we had to go into bankruptcy in 1999, we moved quickly once we relized we couldn't make it. We contacted a local attorney, Kevin Courtney, who agreed to take our case. After filing all the papers he requested and paying his fee, we waited to get our date in bankruptcy court. After a reasonable t...ime of waiting, I started calling the office to find out what was happening. We waited from October of 1999 until February of 2000. After hearing excuses like "the court is too busy with the holidays to take our filing" and other unbelievable excuses, I wrote Mr. Courtney a letter telling him that if I didn't hear from the bankruptcy court with a date within 10 days, I would contact the court personally. I hand walked the letter into his office and had his receptionist sign for it. That was at 9:00 am. Later, I saw that my file, which had been in his office for months, was filed with the bankruptcy court the same afternoon I gave him my letter. I never did see Mr. Courtney again. He sent a "rent-a-lawyer" to court (without first advising me that he was going to do so) who met us in the hallway and didn't have a clue how to present our case. This lawyer was told by the court officer that if Mr. Courtney didn't get his act together and stop pulling shenanigans, the court officer would see that his name was taken off the court approved lawyer list. We did get our bankruptcy approved, and have cursed this man for years. It's impossible to share the pain he caused us by dragging out our case and not responding to our calls. Again, I wouldn't use this attorney if you paid me to do so!
