Hugh Cook graduated from the University of California, Riverside, with a bachelor's degree in English and a minor in political science. He attended the San Francisco School of Law and, following graduation, practiced in the areas of criminal law, employment law, personal injury, and environmental law, including work with the Marin County District Attorney's Office and several Bay Area law firms.
Mr. Cook joined Brayton Purcell LLP as an associate attorney in March 2000. His practice focuses on representing individuals and families harmed by occupational and environmental exposures, with particular emphasis on mesothelioma, asbestos-related diseases, silicosis, and other serious personal injury matters. Over more than two decades with the firm, he has traveled extensively throughout the United States, meeting with clients and their families in their homes to help them understand and pursue their legal rights against corporations that placed profits ahead of worker and consumer safety.
In recent years, Mr. Cook has played a significant role in the firm's investigation and prosecution of cases involving workers exposed to respirable crystalline silica through the fabrication and installation of artificial stone countertops. He has worked closely with affected workers and their families, helping develop cases against manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, and other entities involved in bringing engineered stone products to market. His work has focused on identifying exposure histories, reviewing corporate conduct, and assisting in efforts to hold responsible parties accountable for the devastating health consequences suffered by countertop fabricators and installers.
A member of the California State Bar, Mr. Cook is also admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He is a member of Public Justice and Consumer Attorneys of California. Throughout his career, Mr. Cook has devoted himself to advocating for workers and their families, aggressively pursuing claims arising from workplace injuries and toxic exposures on behalf of the men and women whose labor helped build and defend our nation.
