Ted Aubrey Vin Smith

Ted A. Smith is a litigator and insurance coverage advisor practicing in the Northern California Berger Kahn office.

Ted defends insurance companies, advises insurers on coverage and claims handling issues, and litigates policy cancellation and insurer contribution issues. Ted has advised clients on claims under policies of commercial general liability, commercial property, homeowners, landlords, professional liability, directors and officers liability, errors and omissions, personal and commercial auto, fidelity bond, aviation, entertainment, and crop insurance. In addition to insurance companies, he has also represented and advised JPA risk management entities. He advises clients on claims in California and throughout the western United States, and has also advised insurers regarding nationwide approaches to significant coverage issues.

He also represents clients of the firm in other complex commercial cases and business disputes. Ted has represented and advised clients across a wide range of substantive areas, including contractual, real estate, construction, legal malpractice, environmental, business tort and defamation matters.

Over the past 20 years, Ted has served as litigation counsel in both state and federal courts, and developed substantial experience in alternative dispute resolution, including arbitration and mediation. He has also been involved in appeals and writ proceedings as lead appellate counsel, co-counsel, and amicus counsel.

Prior to joining Berger Kahn, he was associated with two other prominent litigation and insurance coverage law firms.

Ted makes his home with his wife and two children in St. Helena, California.
