Horrible experience.

I had really bad expirience with this attorney. Fortunately The fee arbitration after reviewing my case decided that he must return part of the payment he received from me. I wish I never hired him.

Alex came to me after complaining that his first Family Law attorney was charging him excessively. I reviewed her bills and found no problem but the case was highly litigious and it cost him with his original attorney over $5000 per month. I offered him a better rate and better service, and I represented him for over another 2 years. His family home was ordered sold by the Court, and after he lost his job early in the first 6 months of my representation, I reluctantly agreed to be paid out of the house sale. Despite him approving everything, in the end he disputed my bill on credit and was awarded less than 3% back due to me having to go to arbitration over a $50,000 total bill. Finally, this happened in I believe 2017, but his first complaint here had many falsehoods and was deleted forcing the short critique that he has now left.

Does not communicate with client.

I hired Mr. Hughey for an eviction case about a year ago. Our business relationship was ruined from his lack of communication with me as a client. He never updates you, or follows up when he says he will. Not a dependable lawyer, I spent money and time for Mr. Hughey's services and nothing was accom...plished.

I try not to call and write a client unless in is necessary. I do not waste billable time. This client was relatively unsophisticated and craved constant explanation of everything, but did not expect to be billed for that. Knowing this, and the client's means, I limited my time to what I thought they could afford without losing efficiency. There was some confusion in communication, however, and they grew impatient despite my best efforts to communicate with them. I am also wary of anyone who states "nothing was accomplished" despite the obvious evidence of work done. Unsophisticated clients expect an attorney to accomplish immediate miracles often, and do not appreciated that the time spent of a client's case is the attorney's commodity. Time used for communication and preparation of matters, including travel time if part of an hourly agreement, is work. Everyone expects to be paid for their work, and that includes attorneys. I work with what I am given, and sometimes it completely dictates my handling of the case. In this case, there was no simple eviction, but a convoluted and complex mix of mistakes on the owner's part that lead to no quick or easy solution.

Professional misconduct

This lawyer was disciplined by a state licensing authority in 2011.

Discipline, Probation; no Actual Suspension issued in CA, 2011

updated on 09/19/2019

This sanction means the attorney had a suspension placed on hold (and ultimately removed) by complying with certain requirements.

Julius’s comment:

“Accepted voluntary discipline after admitting that I had relied upon good friend who referred to me the 3 clients who were her friends. They complained about my delay on their cases. All other clients notified directly by me. I later discovered those 3 where never properly notified by agent. Lay in bed 7 months in chronic sciatic condition until I received the second of two back operations with Kaiser approval. Now I am considered disabled and have mobility problems, but continue to work.”
