James Chung-Yul Yoon

I have more than 20 years of experience as an intellectual property litigator and counselor.  I have litigated over 150 patent cases and has tried numerous cases in federal and state courts. In addition, he has tried numerous cases at the International Trade Commission.

I have an active IP counseling practice. I have advised over 50 companies on IP issues in transactions ranging from patent licensing and asset purchase agreements to initial public offerings (IPOs) and corporate mergers and acquisitions.   As part of my IP counseling practice, I am frequently involved in IP risk assessments and valuations. 

I am a member of the committee that developed the original and the revised Model Patent Jury Instructions for the Northern District of California.  I am a Lecturer in Law at Stanford Law School and an adjunct professor (Lecturer in Law) at Santa Clara University School of Law.  I have published multiple articles in law reviews and legal journals.  I also write a column on patent law and litigation for the ABTL Report of the Northern California Chapter of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers (ABTL).

In 2013, 2014 and 2016, I was listed in the International Who's Who of Patent Lawyers. In 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016, I was selected for inclusion in Northern California Super Lawyers in the field of Intellectual Property Litigation. In 2006, Bay Area Lawyer Magazine named me one of the "Top Lawyers in the Bay Area" for Intellectual Property law. 

Prior to joining the firm, I served as a law clerk to Chief Judge Alan C. Kay in the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii.  Before law school, I was also an electrical engineer for the General Motors Corporation, where I worked for many different operations, including the General Motors Technological Center (Warren, MI), Opel Motors (Russelsheim, Germany), Vauxhall Motors (Luton, England), and GM's Cadillac Assembly Plant (Detroit, Michigan).
