I am a Certified Family Law Specialist, certified by the State Bar of California, Board of Legal Specilization. I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law. Before I started my own practice, I worked in the San Francisco office of one of the largest law firms in the world. There I learned discipline, hard-work, perfectionism and a devotion to positioning my clients in the best possible light given the law and the facts of the matter.  I opened my solo practice in 2010.  I was committed then, and remain committed now, to ensuring top quality representation that does not sacrifice client needs.

I am devoted to knowing the law better than anyone else in the Courtroom and I work ceaselessly to develop legal strategies to get you the results you desire.  Family law is a more complex discipline than most give it credit for.  While the concept of community property is relatively simple, the process of figuring out how to divide it can be deeply complicated and challenging. My goal is always to ensure that you come out with what you desire.

I wanted my practice to be different from the practices I had worked in before.  Too many times, in first meetings, the client would speak for 30 seconds about what was wrong and the lawyer would speak for 59 minutes and 30 seconds about what they were going to do about it. I pride myself on listening to clients and learning their needs while helping them translate the facts into legal claims and the story of their case.

When I talk about strategizing a case, I mean that from the very beginning I am listening to your story in order to figure out how I will position you both to the other side and ultimately to the Court.  I have developed winning approaches to both litigation and settlement.  We go to war when we must, but I also always work toward getting an advantageous settlement.  Ultimately, my goal is to get you the best outcome that meets your needs and wishes.

Clients consistently tell me that my practice and approach, including listening and actually caring about my clients and their children, is different from other lawyers in the area.

My staff is caring, dedicated and highly skilled and together we work to develop strong relationships with clients that we are able to use to our advantage both inside and outside of the courtroom.

Give us a call and come in to see the difference having a lawyer makes for you.

If you want someone, who loves a good fight. Jude is the MAN!
I've been going through a custody/divorce for the last 17 months. I've had a total of four lawyers through out the process, Jude being the fourth. I will go to say this, just because a lawyer passed the bar they aren't all the same, meaning some (stink) and some (rock). I can say whole heartedly, that Jude takes the cake for the best lawyer i've had. So I am going to share my experience from the get go that I've had with Jude. In January, I was trying to get my custody shifted from North Carolina to Santa Barbara county. I wrote Jude explaining my situation one late evening at about a 11PM. Jude responded to me first thing the following morning at 6AM. My experience of dealing with lawyers, is they aren't the fastest with responses, because they have other clients. But Jude was fast, he was efficient, and I could feel through his email he understood the gravity and the pain I've been through out the process, he left me his phone number and told me to call him as soon as I received his email, we started immediately corresponding. I felt for the first time that, I was lucky enough to find a lawyer that finally would go to bat for me, because the first three didn't have any emotions in my case, with Jude, I felt differently, he shared his story so he understood what was at stake! I felt like this was a match made in heaven for me to fight for my boys. In the process of trying to shift venues, my ex-wife sproadically tried to get emergency custody orders on March 17, 2021. Jude and company received this notice after hours, he told me we needed to respond immediately because the lawyer sent this late in bad faith and didn't give us anytime to respond, and the judge could make a decision first thing the following morning. Jude gave me my assignment, and that was to answer the following declaration to the best of my ability, and he would review it and after I was done, he would touch it and put his staple of excellence on it. Ten hours and 3 mins later at 3:07 AM Jude sent me an email with the completion of our declaration. Jude and the help of his co-workers put together a master piece rebuttal against the emergency order to give us a chance. Today is March 19, 2021 and around 5 PM today, Jude shot me a text saying there request for an emergency order was DENIED. I am gonna say this speaking from a glass box, but if you want someone that will fight like hell for you, do it ethically, and literally share your feelings and what is best for you. JUDE EGAN WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU!!! No amount of gratitude I have for this man will ever be understood, but thank you Jude, you are an honorable and straight animal. Thanks Jude and company!! Amazing Bulldog!!
Our legal case was considered virtually unwinnable. We think JUDE took our case because he believed in us, the merits of our case & our desire for justice. JUDE was like a loyal dog on a front porch: listening, looking, taking everything in...waiting for the right moment. When that moment came, he was like a bulldog: intelligent, confident & aggressive. His trial brief was a work of art; it encapsulated all that we had told him and that he had researched with precise, biting language. Jude is a super lawyer: a great listener, courteous & calm, reasonable & honest, meticulous in his preparation of our case. His staff, especially Kristin, was very helpful and supportive. God forbid we need legal help again, but if we do, Jude will be our counsel for life!

Having a divorce finalized during COVID, just wow! Jude and his team, especially Kristen were amazing the entire time. My case had lots of twists and turns and I'm forever thankful and grateful for their diligence and work at such a challenging time personally and globally. Thank you Jude.

Long review-worth the read: 2nd time's the charm- Master of the Law with Uncanny Ability to Empathize
To say that family law matters are difficult is an understatement. Sometimes they are downright heart wrenching. No matter what was going on with regards to our custody battle with my wife’s ex, she and I would always come back to center…to our foundation, “we are a team and we will get through this together.” When we first started our legal representation journey in the Santa Maria area, we paid little credence to our lawyer being part of the above-mentioned team. We thought, “Our lawyer just needs to be knowledgeable about family law.” We asked all the wrong questions the first time around and ended up going with a lawyer who was very proud of where he went to school and the degree that hung in his office. Both this lawyer and his office staff were extremely disorganized. His office often took messages and did not return phone calls. Paperwork we sent in was not reviewed or lost. Bottom line, we lost that first hearing because our representation was not familiar with the factual details of our case and came into the courtroom woefully unprepared. My wife and I are young professionals and our thought process was and continues to be simple…we expect to be treated the same way by our lawyer and his/her staff that we would show them if they were to come to our place of business. Specifically from my standpoint, I run an office with approximately 9x the amount of staff in the average law office and would be appalled if my staff failed to return phone calls, failed to answer e-mails in a timely fashion, and submitted subpar products. After firing our first lawyer, we re-entered the representation search with a renewed lease on what we were looking for. We wanted a professional practice that would take the time to learn the facts surrounding our case, would communicate effectively with us (being that we were primarily out of state), and could ultimately be a productive part of our team. We found all of that and more in the Law Offices of M. Jude Egan. Jude is a master of the law who not only has the body of work of a highly qualified lawyer (just look at his published work/degrees), but also has this uncanny ability to empathize with his clients. He made it clear that his practice keeps its caseload smaller so that he can learn the facts surrounding his cases, and thus be a stronger advocate for his clients. Once we started working with his practice, it was like night and day compared to our previous experience. Jude took the time to explain everything to us in detail, go over our plan moving forward, and ALWAYS made time to address my wife’s concerns to resolution. As we began to prepare to return to court, another point of clarity emerged. You cannot have an effective Jude without Kristin…period. Jude’s paralegal is an invaluable part of his team. Kristin is a consummate professional who not only communicates effectively/efficiently, but has an excellent grasp of the law. Once the prep work began, we were able to see first-hand the amount of time and care she puts into every single exhibit, legal document, and e-mail. On the day of the hearing, it became abundantly clear that our legal representation was familiar with the facts surrounding our case, would not allow the opposition to make false/inaccurate statements in a court of law, and deeply cared about the family that he was representing. Jude was methodical, precise, and quite frankly a pleasure to watch, as he systematically pointed out the fallacies in opposing counsel’s argument. His behavior and performance on that day restored our lost faith in family law lawyers. The moral of this story is not that our move away motion was granted on our second attempt. It is that we found a great legal team that cared for us as clients, but more importantly, as people. No matter what life brings us in the future, Jude and Kristin will forever be a part of our team.

Consulted
Consulted Jude and being a potential out of state clinic, I came with much apprehension. He definitely listened, responsed and explained what he does in a case that I’m approaching. Giving him as much history as I could, he was able to articulate how the court system works there and what could be the best route if we ended up presenting this case in front of the court.

M. Jude Egan, A Compassionate Lawyer
It was getting late. My husband and I had just had a discussion about what do with our daughter's situation. She and her husband were being pushed around by CWS. My husband and I live two hours away from our daughter. We were not sure who to call. I had been told about M. Jude Egan. My husband had to go to bed. I proceeded to find Mr. Egan's website. I composed an email about our dilemma and sent it off hoping I'd hear from his office the next day. I began to get ready for bed when I heard my phone ding! I got on my email and saw I had a response from Jude himself! TALK ABOUT SERVICE.... We had less than 24 hours to secure a lawyer. Though Jude was in court all the next day he made time to see our daughter and son in law the next evening. Jude's knowledge and compassion were invaluable. Kristen and his office staff were very accommodating. All is behind us now and our daughter's family is back intact with Jude's guidance. Thank you Jude, thank you, thank you, thank you.....

Love my attorney!!
I hired Jude for a child custody case. He is very professional and educated in family law. My case was long and drawn out, and he always made all the deadlines I needed and always responded to any correspondence quickly. He made a stressful and scary process very manageable. Let's face it, nobody wants to have to go to court, but with Jude on my side, it was so much easier.

A Grateful Father
Jude Egan is a brilliant family law litigator. I do not hand out unwarranted compliments and never write reviews unless I am profoundly moved to do so. I am a single father and active duty enlistedman. My family law case encompasses Child Custody, Support, Divorce, and Move-Away Orders. Jude’s thorough research into my case and related case law along with his expert litigation skill have garnered me sole physical and legal custody of my young children. It’s exceedingly rare in the state of California for a father to be awarded such a privilege. Even rarer is a father receiving out of state move-away orders with his children, which is the Court’s current tentative ruling. Jude and his staff have an in-depth understanding of how governing military guidelines and military law can and cannot impact a civilian family law case. This knowledge has been pivotal at disarming the abuse of mandated reporting authorities to include my chain of command, on-base family advocacy social workers, and even Child Welfare Services (CWS). These attacks were meant to strip me of my parental rights as well as my career. Jude effectively convinced the court to reserve judgement until all aspects of this case had been revealed. The result is that my children are safely with me and their best interests are at the forefront of the Court’s decision-making. Additionally, Jude and his staff have been compassionate to my situation and have always been respectful. My children and I will always be thankful for the positive life changing impact Jude and his law firm have had on our lives.

Anyone looking for an AMAZING lawyer, this is your man. Jude is the best of the best. My husband and I had a very complicated case and had no idea what the outcome would be. Jude at every step of the way was very honest and always fought for our best interest. He has an excellent team as well, Kristen is a super star at what she does. Knowledgable, fair, reassuring, honest
Jude has a rare combination of being extremely smart and has a huge heart. My family law case was very complicated and took a very unexpected and challenging turn. He was reassuring and had a game plan that proved to be successful. I appreciate his honesty, candor, and comprehensive grasp of family law. His office staff was very friendly and helpful. I feel like Jude was an advocate for myself and my son. I never got the feeling that his pricing or charges were out of line. A year ago I found myself in need of an emergency consultation days before Christmas. Jude worked me into his schedule which I appreciated greatly. He is a compassionate person which meant the world to me.

Trust the process
I've worked with Jude for almost 5 years now. He's slowly turning into the "family attorney". He's handled our family law case, my will and other medical documents involved in a life changing personal injury case, passport needs with the State Dept, business concerns as a small business owner and a host of other situations as they occur in my ever evolving life. I had interviewed over a dozen of the local quack jobs. Yes, I don't trust attorneys. Jude was the only one that didn't give me the speech. "I will get you this and that". In the end your attorney is only your voice in court. Backed up with their years of experience and knowledge of course. The matter is what it is no matter what an attorney charges you. Based on this I chose Jude. It was a gut instinct. Most attorneys charge a retainer and refuse to settle until they've exhausted those funds. I've witnessed this on the opposing side every single time. It's taught me to not only be patient, but to trust the process.

Professional and Honest, seems to sincerely care
He has helped me with 3 very different legal issues and very diligigent and thorough in all 3 instances. Found him extremely helpful when explaining the reality of the situation, not trying to tell me what i want to hear, but instead giving the truth and his honest professional assement. For somebody in a situation where the legal system can be confusing and overwhelming, its nice to know i am getting REAL help, REAL advice, not just somebody saying whatever sounds good to get my business. Was extremely helpful walking us through complex wills and trust for both my spouse and I as well as my parents. Explained everything involved, different options, potential pitfalls, alternative ways or proceeding, etc. And was careful to make sure we UNDERSTOOD so that we are prepared.

Mr. Egan has been providing exceptional legal advice to me and my family for over six years. His services have been particularly useful in setting up and incorporating a small business and provided invaluable advice regarding my brother's separation and child custody. Most recently he has provided advice and assistance in adjusting my personal estate to include coverage of my recently born son. He is very knowledgable about the law and has a great ability to explain and make complicated aspects easier to understand. I have and will continue to highly recommend his services as a lawyer.

Very Good Divorce Attorney
I hired Mr. Egan for my divorce, I was referred to him from my friend that was also very happy working with him. My divorce included a bad custody battle. He was very informative from day one and clearly explained his strategy in a way that I could understand. His advice and court room demeanor as well as approach won my case and the spousal and child support I needed to move forward. His office was also good with keeping me informed during the process. Thank you Mr. Egan

Not an attorney to work in the child’s best interest
Hired this doctor Egan fellow he is actuallly a PhD and spent over $2000. He was set to try to try to collect back child support from the other parent and didn’t respond to phone calls or emails. His legal assistant would answer for him when I was trying to reach him. The results were not what was expected. He watches the clock and doesn’t respond to lower income clients. Why take on this case if you aren’t trying to resolve a dispute between the parents so the child benefits? Great talker, very convincing but all about the Benjamins.

Response from M. Egan October 5, 2017
I know who this is. You were a pro bono client. You never paid anything for the services you received nor did I ever ask you to pay anything for the services I provided. You had a VERY complex legal issue that I spent hours analyzing (for free) and argued to the court and with your ex (for free). I offered to take the case on appeal for you (for free - you pay the filing fees of $775 and the costs of getting the record - another ~$1,500) but we discussed the fact that there was less than that in back support at stake. Yes, we jointly made a business decision about taking a pro bono appeal where the potential reward was less than the costs (not attorney's fees, but out of pocket costs) an agreed not to pursue it. Then, out of the blue, a couple of weeks ago, I got a message from you at 5:30 on Facebook messenger asking if we could talk that week; I didn't respond because it was on Messenger and it was after hours and I was with my own daughter. Then an hour and a half later, it's like a second personality showed up and you went completely out of control crazy. You began to threaten and harass me on social media, you stalked my wife, first on social media and then via text message, you said horrific things to me and to her (horrible, disgusting things, things that would make anyone do what I did, which was block you from all social media, my cell phone, my email). You demanded a substitution of attorney to be your own attorney, and then the next day when we provided it, you sent an email saying: "wow, that's strange, it looks like Jude wants me to be my own lawyer. I'm surprised. I was hoping to make an appointment with him." Then, when we showed you the awful (and I mean disgusting) messages you sent, you said "I knew it was bad, but not that bad." You signed the substitution of attorney; we gave you your file. You give me 1 star as your lawyer, I give you 1 star as a client ( I would give you less if I could). I have had difficult clients, other clients with mental illness much worse than yours, that I have worked with for years and with a great deal of compassion. I have worked for tamales, for goats and chickens (literally), for electrical work on my home and for the satisfaction of helping a person in need. I give my time willingly to people in need all the time. I have a business to run, my own employees and family to take care of (4 children), but I always take five minutes, 20 minutes, an hour to help people in my office, on the phone, at the courthouse. I tried with you; I really tried. But you were ungrateful, demanding, angry, and unpredictable; ultimately, what you said to me and my wife in a fit of God-knows-what went beyond the realm of human decency. Anyone who knows me, knows that this response is out of character for me, but you are a horror story.

"I heartily endorse this lawyer. Jude is thoughtful, informed, precise and accurate. That's a key set of skills to have by your side on a matter. He is also easy to work with and that is a great bonus. I can think of several instances when we have worked together where Jude's sense of humor and general ease of demeanor made light work of otherwise tiresome tasks. He was adept at dealing both with awkward partners and demanding clients, never holding up the work in the process. While he and I worked on complex energy matters, I am so comfortable with Jude's skills that I have used him as my personal lawyer. It is a big plus to have someone with the interpersonal skills to make work a pleasure. But its absolutly essential to work with lawyers that know their stuff; whose lawyering skills can be relied on. To find both sets of attributes in one colleague, that is as good as it gets. I'm happy to endorse Jude and you are free to contact me directly if you have questions."
