I am a second-generation criminal defense attorney, the son of two career public defenders, with over eight years experience myself as a public defender in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. I believe in treating my clients with respect, listening to their story without judgment, protecting their rights, and fighting for the best possible outcome in their case. I understand that no two clients are the same, and no case deserves a cookie cutter treatment. Clients who have the best information are empowered to make the best decisions, and I make it my mission to lay out the process, the evidence, and the law for my clients in a non-threatening way so they can feel confident in the direction and resolution of their case. I pride myself in being able to understand and relate difficult scientific concepts to juries, and I love the challenge of developing expertise in an new area of science or law.
In addition to my work as a criminal defense attorney, I assist clients in civil negotiations when they need someone to organize and present a case on their behalf. Through practice, I have become a versatile attorney that can quickly get up to speed on unorthodox cases with novel issues.
When I am not in trial or representing clients in negotations, I am helping organizing local activism events. I assist large public marches and activists doing direct action by acting as a negotiator between activists and police. As an activist myself, I am constantly in contact with law enforcement negotiating on my own behalf and on the behalf of my comrades, and I instruct activist groups around the country on how to assert their Constitutional rights effectively.
I am an animal lover. I rescue and foster cats, and I assist and advise those looking to help rescue animals of all species.

Relationship: Opposing Counsel on matter
Hogan and I would battle it out over various criminal cases when I used to practice in Santa Barbara. While we (often) did not see eye to eye, we always had respect for one another. I knew he was worth his salt since I would often find myself working extra hours either in preparation to face him, or in an effort to rebut his arguments. Hogan is a hardworking and passionate advocate for his beliefs and his clients. I would trust him to fight my battles any day.

Relationship: Fellow lawyer in community
Hogan has the traits that make him a great lawyer. I had the pleasure to practice criminal defense with Hogan at the Santa Barbara Public Defender's Office, where I personally observed him interact with clients and litigate cases in court. He is orally articulate, has good written communication skills and is also a good listener. He can write clearly, persuasively and concisely. He has great judgment and is able to draw reasonable and logical conclusions to solve problems. He is not only logical and analytical, but also displays a great deal of creativity in his problem solving. He is personable, persuasive and reads others well. Hogan cares about his clients and takes pride in giving his clients the time they deserve. He advocates zealously for his clients, he is dedicated to the practice of law, and practices law in an ethical manner.

I endorse this lawyer. Hogan and I first met while he worked with the Santa Barbara County Public Defender's Office. His trial skills are second to none. He also worked with the Ventura County Public Defender's Office and developed an equally impressive reputation as an effective Defender in that court. If you are in need of a skillful lawyer to defend against criminal charges, Hogan is a great choice.
Christy Horowitz, Criminal defense Attorney on Aug 28, 2019
Relationship: Opposing Counsel on matter
I highly recommend and endorse Hogan Ganschow as a criminal defense attorney. Several years ago, he was the opposing public defender and I was the deputy district attorney on a domestic violence case. During the jury trial, Hogan demonstrated excellent advocacy for his client. He knows the law and he is committed to obtaining the best outcome for his clients.
