OUTCOME: On advisement before the Supreme Judicial Court.

This was an appeal from a judgment of divorce. The marriage had been only 28 months long, but the couple had lived together for six years before they married. The trial judge ordered Mr. Benedict to pa ... y alimony for five years instead of 14 months, based on adding the time the couple had lived together to the length of the marriage. The asset division also failed to limit itself to assets the parties had accumulated while they were together, and the judge ordered division of all the parties' lifetime assets. After briefing the appeal, the Supreme Judicial Court transferred the case on its own motion.

OUTCOME: Judgment reversed on appeal

A father wanted to terminate child support after his daughter moved in with him. He also wanted to terminate alimony under the Alimony Reform Act's term limits. The trial court dithered with child supp ... ort, and also refused to end alimony, even though his income was not enough to enable him to pay. We appealed the judgment, and 14 months after the judgment entered, the appeals court reversed. The case is now on remand.
