My son was found guilty of 1st degree murder and not manslaughter. His lawyer told him to take the stand. Can We appeal?

Yes. A Public defender can help quite a bit. When you appear, request counsel or consult private counsel.

Can you have a charge you were not convicted of removed from your record or have your record sealed, if not removed?

Convictions can be expunged, but I am uncertain what you mean by "charges".

I live in California and did the initial paperwork for a separation. I took it to the clerk and had it submitted.

2 years? File your petition and serve your ex. Maybe consult with counsel, it is usually free.

Sounds like the DA consolidated the cases for expediency's sake. Make sure you consult with counsel.
