Adding to the pain after the Eaton Fire took my house and neighborhood

My home, along with 36 others in my neighborhood, was recently destroyed in the Eaton fire in Altadena. In the aftermath, my neighbors and I, who live on a private road, needed legal advice regarding forming a road association and contacted Feldsott, Lee & Nichter.I initially spoke with a paralegal, ...Ivan, who was pleasant enough. Given our circumstances, he said he'd check if the usual $250 consultation fee could be waived. He later confirmed a free 30-minute consultation. The morning of our scheduled meeting, Ivan emailed to say, “The attorney said he could meet with you for a 30-minute free consultation. However, we can no longer do it at 2:00 pm today. Would you like to reschedule it for tomorrow morning, at 10:00 am perhaps?” I had hoped to share information with my neighbors at a meeting that evening, so after some back and forth, he then suggested I call after 3:30 pm, saying, “Feel free to call any time after 3:30 pm, ask for me, and then I will transfer you over to the attorney.” At 4:07 pm—as I was returning from the site of my burned-down house and just before I was about to call—I received another email. This one stated that because I hadn’t called precisely at 3:30 pm the attorney had left, and the promised pro bono consultation was now off the table. Instead, they now wanted to charge me $250, as the email stated: “The attorney just left for the day. He asked me to let you know if you would like to reschedule the appointment it would be a $250 consultation.”This bait-and-switch tactic, especially after they had rescheduled me themselves and given the devastation we've experienced, is beyond disappointing. It's a sleazy move that demonstrates a complete lack of compassion. I'm not someone who typically asks for handouts, but in this situation, every bit of help matters. The $250 isn't the point; it's the principle. I'm happy to pay for good legal services, and regularly do in my professional life. But in this case I needed guidance on HOA law, which is outside the area of expertise of any of the lawyers I know.In the wake of this fire, the outpouring of support from the vast majority of people has been overwhelming and heartening. But it's disappointing to encounter a firm like Feldsott, Lee & Nichter, which seems so disconnected from that spirit of generosity. Their actions speak volumes. My experience with them is a reminder that not everyone prioritizes helping others, and I hope this review gives others the opportunity to look elsewhere before seeking their legal counsel.

Bad lawyer

I went to see him and was turned over to a junior lawyer. He was terrible. He wrote an unusable letter. He over charged me. I was told he was bad and nobody was satisfied. I was thrilled with that kind of integrity. Then I got the "official" response. He was terrific and they hated to lose him. So wh...at do I do if my lawyer was bad. Find a new lawyer. Haha. A waste of $800. I think if you are wealthy you would probably fair better.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
