Charles Phan

Charles Phan joined Hurrell Cantrall LLP in 2007, and became a partner with the firm in 2013. He has represented a wide variety of clients, including several Fortune 500 companies, educational institutions, public entities and their employees. His practice area includes the defense of toxic tort, general liability, employment law matters, and allegations of civil rights violations under the U.S. Constitution and both federal and state laws. He has been successful at obtaining numerous dismissals by way of law and motion practice and informal negotiations.

He was named a 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Super Lawyer Rising Star in Southern California, which is an honor bestowed upon only 2.5% of lawyers under 40 years of age or in practice for ten years or less in Southern California.

Mr. Phan attended and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, San Diego. While there, he was awarded the Urban Studies and Planning Award for Meritorious Community Service. Thereafter, Mr. Phan pursued and graduated cum laude with a Juris Doctor degree and a Certificate of Concentration in Health Law with Honors from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio.

During law school, he was the recipient of the Richard A. and Brandon S. Collier Award, the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in CORE 3 (legal research, analysis, writing, and negotiations) and Law of Healthcare Organization and Finance. He also received the Case Law-Medicine Scholarship, the Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP Scholarship, and was on the Dean’s Honors List throughout his three years in law school.

Prior to joining Hurrell Cantrall LLP, Mr. Phan served as a judicial extern to U.S. District Court Judge Kathleen O’’Malley of the Northern District of Ohio and was employed in the corporate legal department of University Hospitals.

Mr. Phan is admitted to practice law in the California state courts and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

In addition to practicing law, Mr. Phan currently serves on the Steering Committee of UC San Diego’s Urban Studies and Planning Department. He also enjoys traveling, and has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Australia, Botswana, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Iceland, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, South Africa, Thailand, United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe.
