great in court, poor rapport with clients

Mr. Holohan is very knowledgeable and aggressive in court, which is great if you are having difficulties with the other party. This divorce/custody situation is new to me, and throughout the process I have had a lot of questions. He is often unavailable and would not return my calls, unless I called ...again and again. There was an incident in which my ex was threatening me legally (I was out of state and he was telling me that I was violating the stipulations in the divorce summons). I felt anxious, threatened, and worried that I was not following the law. I left a message with his office on Sunday and never heard back from them. I called Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Finally he called me back on Wednesday and said that he hadn't called me because I was fine and it wasn't important. Well it was important to ME!!! He's the expert, I don't know the law, and it's HIS job to tell me these things...and if he's too busy, he can certainly have his secretary call me, but he never does. He didn't prepare me for mediation, and not knowing what to expect, I was nervous and called his office several times to ask for advice. He was on vacation, but because of my urgency and multiple phone calls, called me while on vacation (to his credit). This was the NIGHT before mediation, so he did finally help me prepare, but it took MY initiation and many calls. A week before court, I took a packet of information to his office (including the mediation report and various documentation). He did not get back to me about receiving the packet or to prepare me for court. The day before court I called his office, and as usual, he was not there. I was nervous and had no idea how the process was going to go for court the next morning. He did not call me. His paralegal told me that he would find me that morning. I showed up to court early, but he was an hour late (did NOT inform me, I found out because he called the court and I heard the clerk tell the judge). He did not prepare me at all for court; what documentation I needed, how the process would go, etc. After showing up an hour late, he called me into the hall and rushed me through the negotiation process for visitation (had I known, I would have had a plan in mind). He had not even looked at the mediation report that I had given him a week prior. Luckily, I had done extensive documentation, preparation, and research on my own. He was excellent in his negotiations with the other attorney, and we were able to come up with an agreement. When we were done, he did not give me copies of the agreement or anything (said he'd have his office mail them to me). He didn't tell me the date that the visitations would start, nor did he tell me when our next court date would be. My ex's attorney gave him all of that information, and thankfully we are amicable, or I would not have any of that information. I emailed his paralegal the following day with some questions, and still have not received a response (2 days later). I do think he's excellent as an attorney (in regards to his interaction in court and with opposing attorneys, etc), and I plan on keeping him through my divorce/custody process, but will be much more assertive about what I want, and when I have questions and concerns.
