also known as Rene Potter
Margie Rene Potter (Rene) is an attorney at PotterHandy, LLP. She has dedicated her entire legal career to the representation of employees who have been discriminated or retaliated against, harassed, or otherwise denied their rights in the workplace. She received her B.A. in Psychology locally from California State University, San Marcos with a 4.0 before attending California Western School of Law on scholarship and earning her law degree, Magna Cum Laude, in 2014, winning oral argument competitions and receiving many honors and awards along the way. She wrote and edited for her school's law review, an honor reserved for the top 10% of students, and her paper was selected for publication, and subsequently nominated by her school to submit to the National Scribes Law Review Competition as best law review article for 2013 to represent her school. Prior to graduation, Ms. Potter obtained a position as an extern at the United States District Court, Southern District of California, with the honorable Judge Thomas J. Whelan, appointed to the bench by President Clinton. There she gained invaluable experience from her exposure to many civil litigation issues while she researched and drafted judicial orders.
After taking the bar in July 2014, she immediately began post bar work at PotterHandy, LLP, and went on to become an associate attorney there upon receiving her passing bar results in November 2014. In her first year of practice she was promoted to run the firm’s Civil Rights Summary Judgment department, and brought many successful summary judgment motions in federal court, some resulting in six figure settlements.
Ms. Potter was introduced to employment law in 2015 and has never looked back. She has quickly developed a passion for enforcing fairness and the rights of her clients in the workplace, and empowering them to take a stand against improper conduct and mistreatment in the workplace. Ms. Potter has worked on multiple discrimination, retaliation, wage and hour, family leave, medical leave, and employment disability leave cases. She continually hones her litigation skills through being intimately involved in all aspects of her cases, from intakes and getting to know her clients, to the administrative DFEH, EEOC, LWDA and other processes, discovery, depositions, mediations, hearings, settlement and trial. Ms. Potter's dedication to and tenacious representation of her clients and their causes have resulted in her obtaining millions of dollars for her clients. Ms. Potter was promoted to lead employment attorney in 2018.
Ms. Potter stays involved in her community, is active in several organizations and keeps abreast of developments in the law that can affect her clients. She attends the annual CELA conference as well as frequent meetings to establish relationships with her colleagues in the employment law arena.
Ms. Potter will fight for your rights in the workplace and empower you to regain your dignity if you have been a victim of mistreatment or unfair business practices by your employer.
